Born Again Sober People Are Kind of Irritating

Preachy, condescending, you know the drill…

So just a few days ago I watched a video by Mark Manson, bestselling author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck explaining that he quit drinking and what happened that he didn’t expect. It started off well enough. He explained his drinking habits, how they were affecting him and why he cut it down, before eventually eliminating it.

But then as usual, in came the preachiness.

A guy who was a functional alcoholic telling everyone that they should quit drinking. About how bad it is for your health (duh), about how much just one glass affects you for hours afterwards…

Wait, what?

No, one or two glasses doesn’t affect me immediately afterwards, or for the day after like you claim, Mark. The fact he makes blanket assumptions like that piqued my curiosity, and I began to wonder just how much he’s pounded his liver that a drink or two is going to affect him so badly now that he’s in his thirties.

See, what raised my irritation levels a smidgin wasn’t that he’s quit drinking or realised it’s unhealthy — those are both great, especially for someone who put away as much as he did.

So far so good.
