The martini is an intensely personal cocktail. You can make it in a seemingly infinite different number of ways by tweaking any one of the below variables:
- Different gins
- Different vermouths
- Different ratios of each
- Additions of bitters
- Different garnish choices
And because we don’t know exactly where or how the martini came into being, there’s never been a hard and fast rule on the ratio of gin to vermouth like there is for, say, a Manhattan, which is a very clear 2:1 ratio of rye to vermouth.
Which means everyone has a personal preference. So, what does your preference say about you?
Churchill martini
Churchill was reputed to drink a glass with 3oz of cold gin while looking at an unopened bottle of vermouth. In other words, he was just drinking straight gin, ice cold.
