And our first competition is in partnership with an NPO to save rescue animals.

Today, we at bitgrit launched our very own AI competition platform that connects data scientists to projects and firms to AI algorithms. And for the platform’s inaugural competition, we are excited to announce that we have partnered with nonprofit Save All The Pets to give data scientists who sign up for our platform a chance to lend their skills to a cause we care for deeply — saving animals’ lives.

Our platform will regularly have competitions running, and we are currently in talks with several other organizations around the world to get more prompts and data for competitions. These prompts will cover a variety of industries, from telecoms to agriculture and more.

For this very first competition, we worked closely with the CEO of Save All The Pets, Michael Suttles, to develop an AI competition prompt that will enable the organization to maximize adoption rates by moving dogs out of kill shelters. Michael is a data scientist himself, and he started the NPO when he realized that there were much more effective ways to utilize data related to shelter animals.

In a statement to bitgrit, he explained, “Using data science, we can uncover trends about dogs and cats that may indicate where it’s more likely for particular animals to be adopted.” He continued, “Save All The Pets plans to use this information to save lives through targeted transport. It’s data science with heart.”

As stated in a report by American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, of the millions of dogs that enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, 1.6 million are adopted, 670,000 are euthanized, and 620,000 are returned to their owners.

To maximize adoption rates, Save All The Pets uses data science and cutting-edge technologies like neural networks to analyze adoption rates at different shelters based on size, breed, age, and other characteristics.

The bitgrit competition prompt asks data scientists to identify dog breeds based on thousands of pictures provided by Save All The Pets, with 260,000 rows and 26 columns of data. The difficulty level is between amateur to medium, allowing both experienced and beginner data scientists to use whatever tools they like to develop an AI solution that they submit on our platform. The competition begins today on August 15 and closes next month on September 22, after which we will announce the winners based on the top three solutions submitted. The grand prize winner will receive $150, and second- and third-place winners will receive $75 and $50 respectively.

Note: This competition is now closed. You can find a list of bitgrit’s other AI competitions on our website here.
