What follows is the list of the best restaurants I tried during my last trip to Israel (2012)

Jerusalem

Eucalyptus

14 Hativat Yerushalayim Street, Jerusalem

Just outside of the historic center (you can walk there), close to the city walls, in a very nice setting — in a small alley full of shops. You can dine outside, right on said alley.

You can order à la carte, or ask for one of their tasting menus, an exceptional way to taste original Israeli food. The menu is inspired from the Bible, which adds an original touch to an amazing food experience. In my personal top 3 of restaurants in Israel.

Abu Shukri Restaurant

Close to the Damascus Gate

Very good kebab — some say the best of the Old Town. Great for a quick meal while you visit the city.

Nafoura

Close to the Jaffa Gate

Slightly touristic, but the food is still good at reasonable prices. Outside dining is possible, in their courtyard.

Barood

Feingold Courtyard, Jaffa St, Jerusalem

Very cozy, in the Jewish quarter. Decent wine selection and good local food.

Humus Ben Sira

Ben Sira St. 3, Jerusalem

Hummus is *fantastic*. Small venue, not the best option for groups.

Beit Ticho

Jerusalem 9, Harav Kook Street, Jerusalem

A good restaurant, in a very, very good ambience: the garden of the Ticho House. It’s worth visiting if you’re looking for a nice setting outside of the tourist route. Slightly upscale, but prices are reasonable.

Akko

Uri Buri

93 Haganah Street, Akko

Probably the most famous restaurant in Akko, all about fish. It’s totally worth a visit: the fish is extremely fresh and very well cooked. In my personal top 3 of restaurants in Israel.

Caesarea

Helena

Old Cesarea Park, Caesarea

If you visit in the summer, it might not be easy to get a table for dinner, but it’s well worth the wait. If you have the opportunity, ask for a table right above the sea, close to the Caesarea lantern. Another restaurant that made my personal top 3.

Tel Aviv

Max Brenner

Sderot Rotshild 45, Tel Aviv

A classic. Inspired by The Chocolate Factory (the book, well before the movie). Chocolate in all shapes and flavours.

Dr. Shakshuka

3 Beit Eshel St., Jaffa, Tel Aviv

While you’re visiting Jaffa, take the occasion to try the Shakshuka, a typical Tel Aviv dish. Rustic and fun.
