What is a Nonprofit?

A nonprofit organization or NPO is an institution dedicated to a particular social cause or to the advocacy of a shared point of view. Nonprofits are given tax-exempt status under the IRS’s 501(c) code.

Under this code, there are two main types of non-profit organizations: nonprofits and not-for-profit organizations (NFPOs). NPO’s serve the community through goods and services. NFPOs may exclusively serve a group of members.

When you first think of the term nonprofit, you may automatically be thinking of a 501(c)(3); these are known are public charities or charitable nonprofits, that operate exclusively for the purpose of promoting charity, religion, education, science, literature, public safety, fostering national or international sports, or preventing child and animal cruelty.
