One year ago, today

Chances are, the you today is a total stranger to the you one year ago. In the midst of all the chaos that life brings us, we often overlook the truth that everything is temporary, and we hold on to certain parts of our life longer than we should. The feelings, the memories, the good, the bad, and the ugly… we hold on with the presumption that they will last forever.

Whether you are at the pinnacle of your career, or at a point so low that you cannot see the sun, realize that this too shall pass.

Think of all that you’ve been through in the last twelve months… the people you’ve met, the things you’ve learned, and the events you’ve witnessed. The unfolding of an infinite series of timelines and possibilities had to have happened in precisely one way for you to be here now. Take a minute to ponder the implications of where you stand. You couldn’t have controlled all of the possible factors if you wanted to. You’re in this moment for a reason.

Yesterday’s reality is as fickle as tomorrow’s possibilities… all you really have in your grasp is this very moment. Memories of the past and predictions of the future are good to reminisce and to excite about, but they should not be so overbearing as to prevent you from taking action today.

Holding onto past glory and achievements doesn’t help you grow, but instead makes you a little too comfortable, to the point where you become obsolete. Why would you want to live a bland life without the challenge of growth? Knowing that all of it can wash away in an instant is enough to kick-start your brain into a new state of awareness. If this seems grim, take solace in the fact that if you’re stuck in a dark place now, you’ll most inevitably be happy again, even if by pure statistical chance.

Live in the moment, precisely this moment… You don’t know what the universe is going to do to you next, so relax. Every moment is both your past and your future.
