Cider tasting notes by the poet Caroline Hemphill; Cider flight by The Northman in Chicago

Last night I had the great good fortune to share a cider (or two) with the poet Caroline Hemphill at The Northman’s inaugural Cider School, and her tasting notes were — as you might expect— poetry.

Sharing for the thirsty, with her consent:

Uncle John’s Apple Apricot
Winner: GLINTCAP 2016 Best in Class
smooth Semillon
dip in a swimming pool

Wandering Aengus, Wickson
apples are related to roses –
early love, hope
the middle of the summer before it turns

Sandford Orchards, Chestnut
bitter, lightly sweet
letting go of old regret
Beaujolais

Le Brun de Bretagne, Brut Cidre
lavender

postscript: love the conversation that has bubbled up on Twitter around this post…

Cidrbox.com connects people seeking orchard-driven cider with the artisans who make it. Each month we visit a single, distinctive American heritage orchard — where small producers grow, harvest, press, ferment and refine their cider — and we ship their cider to our subscribers. We also sit down for a tasting with the maker, and we share that tasting with you at cidersessions.com.

p.s. When we say cider, we mean hard cider: Artful fermentations of heirloom apples by master cidermakers. You must be at least 21 to drink what we deliver, and you will be asked for your ID and signature at the door.
