Making Language Exchange Work

Learning a second language is a useful skill. One popular way to practice is through language exchange.

Unfortunately, conversations revolved around repetitive discussions: where are you from, what were you doing here in the city, and how old are you.

Not my cup of tea.

It didn’t take too long for me to call it quits.

Here’s what I should have done differently:

- Find goal-oriented partners. They might be practicing English for travel, for work, or for studying.

- Prepare what I want to practice: a lesson from a book, an article, or impromptu speech.

- Ask for feedback in person or in writing.

- Schedule the next session before the meeting ends.
