There are still people who, when they hear someone is on the spectrum, immediately think of a mental deficit. It’s a shame since research is showing the width and depth of the spectrum are immeasurable and that within it lie some of the most brilliant people.

In today’s world, there are programs for all manner of learning disabilities, but as with everything public school, they are not all addressed equally. School districts with beaucoup bucks can spend more per child than districts in remote or inner-city areas.

And, once again the disparity of income impacts the future of a child. It’s not just the money for salaries and curricula, impoverished areas rarely attract the most qualified teachers, if they can attract teachers at all. These are students that need educators who consistently improve their knowledge, and administrators who allow it into the classroom

My daughter had extreme ADHD and yet they expected her to not interrupt, sit still, and do her work like every other child in the room. I asked them if they would assign a child with a 70 IQ a calculus text, to interpret Shakespeare, or ask a paralyzed child to play volleyball.
