Day 23 March Madness Challenge

Spring Is Here, Baby!

For Day 23 of Keeley Schroder’s March Madness Challenge, she wants to know my favorite season and why.

Spring has them all beat. For the usual reasons. Everything comes to life again. It is beautiful to see the flowers and trees bloom and the grass turn green. There are suddenly colors other than brown.

It gets warm again. Ok, in North Carolina we have no extremely cold weather. Sometimes it is warm in December and January, followed by cold days. Yet, with Spring, we know the warmth will last.

I can plant my little garden and hopefully harvest enough vegetables to make it worth the time.

When I was a child, my aunt lived in Rockville, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C. So every spring, we would visit so we could see the cherry blossoms. Today and tomorrow are considered peak bloom this year, by the way. In the early 1900s, the mayor of Tokyo sent 3,000 sakura trees to Washington, D.C. Theodore Roosevelt was interested in beautifying the capital and the fluffy blooms of these trees helped fulfill his vision. It is a wonderful sight when they come into bloom around the Tidal Basin. Each year, there is a Cherry Festival in Washington celebrating this sight and the beginning of spring.
