McMillan aiming to bounce back against Cork
Lilywhites and Leesiders meet in crunch clash at Oriel
David McMillan said that the pain of Saturday night’s 3–0 defeat to Sligo Rovers will be quickly forgotten if The Lilywhites can beat Cork City on Tuesday.
Dundalk’s gruelling schedule has been well documented but McMillan said that one of the only positives of the jam packed fixture list was that it gives the players a swift opportunity to put things right.
“The games are coming so fast that we have a quick chance to redeem ourselves,” he told The Dundalk Democrat.
“Results like the one tonight haven’t happened to us too many times and the only way to get over that is to win the game on Tuesday.
“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves,” he continued. “There’s no point in that. We’ve got to be men about it and the best way to answer the critics is to go and win the game against Cork.
“We know that people have been praising us for our good performances so if we have to take sone stick after this defeat that’s fair enough.”
Sean Maguire’s brace against Galway United on Saturday night has seen the Cork City striker overtake McMillan at the top of the goalscoring charts.
In terms of the league table, the Leesiders are breathing down Dundalk’s neck, sitting just a point behind but McMillan said it would be foolish of people to start questioning the champions after one bad loss.
“Sure, tonight is a bad defeat but it’s not the end of the world,” said the 27-year-old. “We’re still a point clear of Cork and we’ve had setbacks this season and come back from them.
“People in the dressing room were giving examples of when things haven’t gone for us in the past,” he added.
“Two years ago, with one game to play we lost the lead only to win the title by beating Cork.
“This team is made of good characters and I think we have shown that in the past. “
