Black Bear December Prompt

Do you get the holiday blues?

The holidays were hard for me for quite some time. They were tainted when I was younger and having to shuffle houses from divorced parents which started out fun because you got more presents but then it just became disconnected.

The traditions lacked and there was often some blowout fight including my mother and whoever she was pissed off at.

So, when my daughters started getting older and the joy of the holiday magic began to dissipate, I started dreading the holidays. I no longer wanted to fake the interest in putting up all the. decorations, and was exhausted from the many years of putting on a pretty face.

Instead of voicing my disdain for holiday prep and gift buying, last year, I embraced the smaller things. I put out fewer decorations and ornaments. I bought some experiences instead of gifts and the rest online to save myself from the anxiety-inducing holiday madness.

I told myself that it was okay not to attend a few things, deciding to read a book instead. I was happier without the pressure, and this year, I am back to wanting to create holiday magic.

But, genuine magic, not a fake facade.

Do you relate? How do you feel about the holidays? Even if you don’t have a hard time enjoying them…
