Like I have every day since I was 12, I awoke in a total blur this morning. I opened my eyes and saw the soft outline of what I know is my oldest cat perched at my open window. She likes to watch the squirrels who skitter up the towering pine trees. Then I reached for my glasses, and my room came into crisp detail.

I confirmed it was 7:20 AM, that it was indeed Pepper, my black and gray feline, on the sill, and my littlest little tux kitty was Athena jumping on my bed.

I’m nearsighted enough to only see a few inches in front of my face. I only know that our neighborhood squirrel friends scoot their copper-hued bushy tails up pine trees because I have corrective lenses for distance.

Since I also have astigmatism in both eyes, my glasses only partially correct my vision. I’ve worn contact lenses since 1985, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Contact lenses changed my life. I was taking a vision test in class one day in 7th-grade biology class when I called out the wrong letter. I thought I saw a “B” and called it out…
