How a Night Out Leads to a Lost Week
On drinking and time travel
‘When I was drinking, there were many times when I was out for the night and didn’t come back for a week’ -U2’s Adam Clayton in The Guardian
The above quote from Adam Clayton — now 28 years sober — reminded me of the many misadventures I experienced during my active addiction to alcohol.
It made me think of time travel.
Of being in places but not being present.
But also of how a seemingly innocent drink often led me to some pretty unpleasant places.
While working one morning at my small, private office, I got a phone call.
A friend. An invitation.
In my mind, this would be lunch — maybe a long lunch — then back to the office for more work and then home for dinner.
I knew, though, the lunch would likely involve a drink — it always did.
Lunch was great — I remember that. Good food, fun conversation — more than one drink.
Then, on to my friend’s office. Two other friends joined us for a bit.
More drinking.
I remember being at a restaurant later. No idea how we’d gotten there.
