Summer is my favorite season of the year. The warmer months and the longer days remind me of my hometown, which only had two seasons: summer and monsoon. I’ve grown to appreciate the different seasons in the North East, but summer remains my favorite. As a teacher bound by the academic calendar, summer also ends up being my time to unwind and recharge for another new year at school.

Staying active and traveling nourishes my soul. My summers are usually filled with a lot of tennis and swimming, socializing with friends, and definitely some fun trips: both local and international. However, this summer has been unlike any other. With a stage zero cancer diagnosis earlier in the year, this summer was all about treatment and recovery.

The diagnosis hit me hard. I won’t lie. It took me several weeks to process the news and do my due diligence to understand the diagnosis and choose a treatment plan that works for me. For someone who leads a healthy lifestyle with a well-balanced diet and regular exercise with no drinking and smoking, I was stumped. What else is there for me to improve?

I spent so many years focusing all my energies on taking care of my family, sometimes to my detriment, that now it was time to focus on myself. What…
