You’ve always been told to “follow your heart” to find happiness. When you’re struggling in life, people around you often say, “Do what your heart tells you, and you’ll be fine.”

But after years of following this advice, you might still find yourself struggling and unhappy.

As someone who battled depression and bipolar disorder for seven years and has now been living a fulfilling life for the past six, I’m here to tell you:

That’s a piece of well-intentioned but pretty horrible advice.

First, let’s define “follow your heart.”

The ‘heart’ is said to be how you feel, your gut reaction, your intuition, and the emotional side of you.

“Follow your heart” means making decisions based on your emotions and instincts instead of using “your head,” which relies on rational or practical considerations.

This advice encourages you to prioritize your feelings and desires, with the belief that doing so will lead to long-term happiness and fulfillment.

Take a moment to think back to the last time you felt frustrated or upset. Perhaps it was something small yet…
