You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise. — Maya Angelou

You may say I’m irrelevant
That my writing’s old and worn
That I’m not up with modern trends
That stray from classic form.

Do my rhyming lines offend you?
Do you think my words are fake?
’Cause I write like I am singing
To make these foundations shake.

Just like the morning sunrise
That awakes us right on time
Just like a child’s joyful smile

Still I’ll rhyme.

Do you want me to write free verse?
To ignore all form and flow?
Do you want to break my spirit
Extinguish this poet’s glow?

Does my stubbornness upset you?
Does my rhyming cause you grief?
’Cause I try to buck the system
And challenge your belief?
