Mass Incarceration as Modern Slavery: Perpetuating the Social Death of Black Women

In contradiction to “colorblind” narratives that dominate discussions of race in American society today, the prison industrial complex…(Davis) demonstrates the fact that, despite the abolishment of slavery, many of our institutions still function to control Black bodies and Black labor. The Thirteenth Amendment allowed prisons to re-impose what can fairly be described as slave labor; the prison industrial complex offers social control while using Black bodies for profit. On White Feminist Racism and Allyship

White women have been so long oppressed by white men that they feel the only way they can empower themselves is by joining in oppressing…black women. This is exemplified by Betty Friedan’s book The Feminist Mystique that invigorated the Second Wave Feminism, and in the #BlackLivesMatter movement that turned into #AllLivesMatter movement. Black women, in turn, have grown wary of would be white heros and a cultural sense has developed producing a “with us or against us” mentality. How can white feminists be a true ally to the cause of Black feminism and #BlackLivesMatter?
