Eyes Without a Face: The Mask of Deception

Covering the face or not? Red or blue?

Donald Trump doesn’t wear a mask in public, while Joe Biden does. This difference in both men’s behavior is explained this way in the liberal media: the mask is cool and, why not, a symbol of collective wisdom; saying or doing the contrary amounts to being some kind of “American idiot.” This pretension was clearly channeled by actress Alyssa Milano’s “Show me your masks!” tweet.

So, “to mask or not to mask?” The formula is symbolic of an ideological gap that should not surprise anyone. The left, that is, “liberals” as much as socialists, have a penchant for stringent rules, if not for authoritarianism. Thus, the fight to impose the wearing of a mask in public is not only intended to save people’s lives. What truly lies behind this action is collectivism, and, most importantly, one of its surgical tools, virtue signaling. In any event, both represent a certain form of tyranny.

Masks Are Not a Practical Solution

I’m not making that up. Many infectious disease experts have warned people against wearing a mask. “There’s no good reason to use these masks except psychologically you think you’re doing something,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, an expert on infectious diseases at UC Berkeley. “When you take the mask off, you’re going to have organisms that filtered through the mask on your hands. Then you may touch your face and you’ll just inoculate yourself.”

Dr. Swartzberg is not alone in his world. Lisa Brosseau, a national expert on respiratory protection and infectious diseases, is on the same wavelength. Here is what she wrote in a paper published on the Center for Infectious Disease Research Policy website.

We do not recommend requiring the general public who do not have symptoms of COVID-19-like illness to routinely wear cloth or surgical masks because:

· There is no scientific evidence they are effective in reducing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission;

· Their use may result in those wearing the masks to relax other distancing efforts because they have a sense of protection;

· We need to preserve the supply of surgical masks for at-risk healthcare workers.

So, why are mainstream media, along with Democrats, pushing Americans to wear a mask? The answer is collectivism.

What Happened to the Enlightenment?

Classical liberals were strong promoters of individualism. In modern times, liberalism has turned into a collectivist ideology. Collectivism supposes that people conform to social norms dictated by the rulers, which can be governments as well as public figures in a position of power. Hong Kong, which spent 99 years under the rule of a country (UK) that carries the banner of the Enlightenment, has seen its residents take the streets to protest China’s harsh policies and collectivism. In America, Democrats have not criticized the communist regime yet for its arbitrary exactions.

Perhaps are they devoting too much of their time and energy spitting on the Trump administration for its response during the major part of the COVID-19 crisis. Despising the current Republican government is an easy game because virtue signaling does not cross the individualism border. That’s why China and its regime fall most of the time under the protection of liberals since they champion collectivism over individualism.

What defines a true classical liberal is individualism, freedom, and acceptance of elitism for the world to progress, to name just a few concepts that gave birth to the Enlightenment. Now, what defines a modern liberal is collectivism, constraint, egalitarianism, or disapproval of elitism, tendency to blame the white West for the world’s problems. This last assertion is ironic but, above all, quite troubling. The Enlightenment never succeeded out East. Only Japan can be looked upon as a true friend of the West, but still, the country is part of the collectivism-oriented Confucian civilization.

By refusing to endorse the philosophies of the Enlightenment, modern liberals can no longer be considered freedom fighters. If Red Staters are not perfect, at least they can’t be blamed for the erosion of civil liberties. To call them “American idiots” is like declaring war to The Star-Spangled Banner. At the end of the day, there is nothing to be gained from using that language.
