Muslims and Liberals Spar Over LGBTQ; the End of an Alliance?

For many Muslims, the Pride agenda is going too far

A split seems to be unavoidable on the left side of the political spectrum. Truth be told, the split had been visible for some time, but recent events have fueled it. The main instigators are Muslims, who are generally associated with Democrats, but who, these days, are forming a bloc against LGBTQ propaganda, thus adopting the same ideological posture as the conservatives.

This uprising was observed closely on June 6 when Muslims gathered to protest the Montgomery County, Maryland, School Board’s refusal to allow students to opt out of information sessions about the LGBTQ community, on religious grounds. Meanwhile, scuffles broke out outside a school board meeting in Glendale, California, between Antifa and parents opposing the school’s Pride agenda.

The two demonstrations have caused a stir in the “progressive” ranks and seriously shaken the foundations on which the Muslim-Democratic alliance is based. Following the June 6 protests in Maryland, a local councilwoman, Democrat Kristin Mink, accused Muslims of teaming up with “white supremacists” against the LGBTQ community. Mink said she opposed the religious rights of Muslim families to opt their children out of information sessions about the LGBTQ community.

An increasing number of Muslim parents stand against the teaching of LGBTQ curriculums in schools. In October 2022, some of them lashed out at a Dearborn, Michigan, school board over the presence of sexually explicit books in school libraries.

Those parents are supported by one of the most powerful Muslim organizations in the United States, the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR). In early March, CAIR objected to the Michigan Senate’s passage of an expanded version of the state’s human rights law protecting LGBTQ groups, on the grounds that it might be unconstitutional and could infringe on religious freedoms.

According to CAIR, under Michigan’s new law, religious institutions could be subject to lawsuits for not accommodating individuals “whose gender identity does not conform with their biological sex assigned at birth.” In its plan to challenge the amendment, the Muslim organization is working with the Michigan Catholic Conference and Protestant groups.

In the West, Muslims, along with Blacks and the LGBTQ community, are among the groups protected by the liberal left and its woke allies, but this political protection appears to be less and less guaranteed due to what could be described as a “clash of civilizations”, at least on the LGBTQ question.

A recent example of this clash of civilizations was observed in Canada, more precisely in Edmonton, Alberta, where a teacher berated Muslim students for refusing to celebrate Pride Month. “It goes two ways!”, the teacher said in class. “If you want to be respected for who you are, if you don’t want to suffer prejudice for your religion, your color of skin, your whatever, then you better give it back to people who are different than you.”

We’ll have to wait until next year in the presidential elections to see if the alliance between the Democrats and the Muslims has really broken down. In the event that Dems lose the Muslim voting bloc, they would very likely bite the dust in November 2024.
