There are many ways to brew coffee at home. Whether it’s pour over, drip, french press, or cold brew, the users of each method claim theirs is the best. But honestly, there is no single correct way to do it. Every method of coffee brewing is unique, and offers different opportunities to express your personality, and the personality of your coffee. But even with every beautiful difference, there are a few factors that are guaranteed to improve all of your brews.

Quality Beans

This may seem obvious to some, but the best way to improve the quality of your coffee is to start with a great coffee bean. The best indicators of premium coffee to be on the lookout for are single origin and a roast date. Feel free to sift through to find the freshest bag, but anything roasted within 3 months of your purchase is just as good since flavor won’t start to diminish until 4 months after it’s roasted. At Black Turtle Coffee, all of our beans are single origin from Brazil and roasted in house, so whichever signature roast you choose, you can’t go wrong.

Filtered Water

It makes sense that if you want a better tasting cup, using great tasting water is an easy way to do so. However, it goes further than that. Having a lot of foreign particles in your water will extract many unwanted flavors from your coffee. Meaning your delicious Bombshell with its signature cooked-berry sweetness will also have notes of dust and copper. Not good. But no need to go out and buy the most expensive pipeline filtration system on the market, for home brewing, a simple gravity filter like BRITA will satisfy all of your filtration needs.

Grind to Order

When making coffee, maximum freshness at every step adds up to a tasty cup thats rich and full-bodied. One of these key steps is grinding as close to brewing as possible. Once coffee is ground, it more rapidly releases CO2, and as it releases CO2, the flavor degrades. This is why one of the best investments you can make in terms of coffee is a coffee grinder. Although a blender or food processor can do a decent job, it is nearly impossible for them to yield a consistent and accurate grind size. And with each brewing method requiring a slightly different grind size, having a grinder that can do the job right every time will ensure the perfect start to every morning.

Just because you wake up, it doesn’t mean you have to stop dreaming. These simple tips, if incorporated into your brew, will have you fantasizing about your coffee throughout the day. At Black Turtle Coffee, we care about the details, so we are always dreaming right along with you.
