The moringa tree is native to the south of the Himalayan Mountains in northern India. It grows in various parts of the world such as West Africa, South Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America.

Moringa is known for its powerful health benefits and is often referred to as a nutrient-dense superfood.

Moringa leaves can be dried and ground to form a smooth powder that is often used in smoothies, juices and other healthy meals.

Moringa leaves are known to contain various minerals, antioxidants and vitamins. They contain vitamin A, which is essential for the immune system, eyesight and fetal growth.

It also contains vitamin C which is known to boost immunity and reduce the risk of infection.

Moringa also contains the powerful antioxidant vitamin E which may help to prevent cell damage.

It contains a significant amount of vitamin B1, B2, B12, C, D, E, K, iron, potassium, zinc, calcium, magnesium, copper.

There are various health benefits associated with moringa. For example, it is known for its antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Traditionally it is used for healing wounds, preventing and relieving stomach ailments such as ulcers and reducing swelling.

In Ghana, for example, the natives often use moringa as a treatment for malaria, infections and stomach ulcers.

The powder can be mixed with smoothies, juices, oatmeal and other meals to provide extra nutritional value to the meal.

Antioxidant Properties

In a research paper published in the March-April 2014 issue of Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine, scientists treated rats with moringa extract for five days. The study revealed that moringa might be an effective treatment for autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

More studies need to be conducted on humans to determine whether or not moringa powder or moringa extract is an effective treatment for inflammatory diseases.

Hair Growth

Moringa powder is traditionally used for hair growth and hair loss prevention.

Moringa contains vitamin A and B and both nutrients are known to protect and nourish the hair.

Vitamin A plays a significant role in the production of new and healthy cells. Vitamin A is also known for supporting the production of sebum, the natural oils released from the skin to moisturise, protect and nourish. This naturally produced oil moisturises the scalp and can prevent breakage as a result of dryness.

Vitamin B plays a part in producing red blood cells which transport oxygen and nutrients to the scalp and hair.

You can use moringa powder to create a nourishing hair mask to reduce breakage and condition the hair.

Moringa powder hair mask recipe

  1. 1 tablespoon of Moringa Powder.(Leaves of Magic Moringa powder is a good one to use)
  2. 1 ripe avocado (mashed)
  3. 1 tablespoon honey.
  4. 1 tablespoon melted unrefined shea butter

Instructions

  • Add the honey and shea butter and stir until well combined and smooth

Instructions for use:

  • Comb through with a wide-tooth comb
  • Saturate the hair from root to tip
  • Cover your hair with a plastic cap or clean plastic bag
  • Leave for 30 to 40 minutes
  • Rinse with lukewarm water
  • Comb hair through
  • Repeat once a month

This moringa powder mask will nourish, moisturise and protect your hair. It will also prevent split ends and excessive breakage leading to healthier and stronger hair over time.

Healthy Skin

The antioxidant properties associated with moringa might also reduce the ageing process by protecting the skin from harmful free radicals.

Earlier, we mentioned that moringa is known for its antibacterial properties. Applying moringa powder topically or consuming it could help to reduce the appearance of pimples by cleansing the blood and cleansing the skin.

Create a moringa powder facial mask by combining one tablespoon of moringa powder with plant-based yogurt. Mix until well combined and apply to the face. Allow the mask to sit for 20 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. Splash your face with cold water afterwards to tone the skin.

Iron Deficiency

Caution: If you have been diagnosed with an iron deficiency, consult your health professional if you wish to replace your iron medication or combine it with moringa powder.

To make an iron infusion:

Make a smoothie using the following ingredients:

  • 1 large pineapple, peeled and chopped
  • 1 peach, chopped
  • 1 thumb ginger, peeled and chopped
  • Handful wild blueberries
  • 3 tablespoons moringa powder
  • 2 cups or more fresh or bottled coconut water

Blend all ingredients with 1 cup or two of ice until smooth. Consume twice daily or as much as you desire.

Taking moringa powder is a convenient and hassle-free way of boosting your nutrient intake. It is known as a powerful superfood and can be used as a natural dietary supplement. Add moringa powder to your homemade juices, smoothies, porridge or other meals. You can even sprinkle moringa powder on your salads with sesame seeds or hemp seeds to add some extra nutrients to your meal.

Remember if you are breastfeeding, pregnant or suffer from high blood pressure, do consult your medical professional prior to taking moringa powder. Although generally safe to consume, it is best to seek professional advice.
