An opinionated review of the fintech/insurtech/regtech deals, in Europe, week by week

Good to see you my Fintech geeks,

What a week ! Britain is (again, you might say…) taking the spotlight with two ground-breaking near-record sums in the latest batch of European fintech deals: 7 of the 8 fintechs that raised capital this week are based in Mr Bean’s country. AND, the United Kingdom is home to one of the largest European Series A with a $230m funding round realised by Checkout.com

But, let’s not spoil our analysis, we’ll get back to this later.

Stop beating around the bush, here is our list:

This week on show:

Checkout.com: it happened last night already but we’re still hearing the blast of its explosion within the fintech galaxy. Checkout surprised everyone as the fintech was like a submarine, in a bootstrapped mode. Founded in 2009, called Opus Payment at that time, Checkout enables retailers to accept and process cross-border payments originated from various sources like cards, online banking, Paypal, Apple Pay, etc. Despite the rude competition with players like Adyen (NL) or Stripe (US), the British Fintech achieved to sign up with solid clients like Samsung, Deliveroo or Transferwise. The $230m Series A, with a $2Bn valuation, was led by Insight Partners and DST Global, with Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC, Blossom Capital and Endeavor Catalyst.

Fractal: surfing the wave of incoming PSD2 and open-banking, Fractal aggregates data to enable financial service firms to score SMEs according to risk rating schemes like cash forecast. Also, the Fintech boosts targeted campaigns via the use of bank accounts information. Fractal Lab works with Santander and the English Companies House. It’s the first company to receive investment from Deloitte’s fintech fund with this Series A.

Applause for this week announcements and brave founders!

Our kudos to all the successful ventures of this week!
