So, as you may know we’ve got lots planned for 2017 and we’ve already kicked things off with three workshops in January, a private screening of Hidden Figures and a virtual reality workshop later this month. We’ve also grown our core team, volunteers and advisory board, the members of which are all committed to bringing you great content and opportunities. 2017 is about increasing engagement with our members and strengthening the foundation of blackgirl.tech. A lot of this stuff will be happening behind the scenes but we want to be transparent with you and keep you up to date with what’s really happening.

Workshops

January was an unusual month where we had three workshops in one month, however we will aim to host one workshop a month and may have other events, such as cinema screenings or talks, outside of the workshop. This year we want to focus on introducing black women to code so most of our workshops will be aimed at complete beginners who have no experience with coding. Few of our workshops may require prerequistes but we’ll make that clear when neccessary. We’ll cover a variety of topics from HTML to Virtual Reality to mini computers. There’ll be lots to sink your teeth into.

Masterclasses

We’ll be hosting a series of masterclasses aimed at companies and organisations focused on how they can better diversify their work environments and make them more inclusive.

These masterclasses will be led by industry professionals and will focus primarily on hiring practices and company culture. The aim is to better prepare employers for diverse candidates and to also ensure that diverse candiates feel comfortable in their work environments.

Funding

In ramping up our services, we’re also ramping up our funding. We’ve recieved donations in the past but we’re now making a dedicated effort to fundraise so that we can do all the amazing things we need to do. So far we have received enough money to operate for the next year, which is great. However, there are things, such as the blackgirl.tech scholarship fund, which are not included in our operating costs but we think are too important to not fundraise for. If you would like to contribute something, you can donate via paypal or eventbrite when you register for an event.

Website

The site will also be undergoing a series of changes this year so that it’s more interactive and serves you all better. The idea is to create a hub for our members that will allow them to easily access resources and keep track of upcoming events.

Trello task board

You can keep track of what’s happening with the site by checking out our to-do list on Trello. If you have suggestions of things you’d like to see on the site, then feel free to tweet us (@blackgirltech) or email (info@blackgirl.tech) us, we’d love to hear from you.

2017 is exciting for us and we hope you’re just as pumped as we are, if you’d like to stay up to date on events, podcasts, and general ongoings you can subscribe to our mailing list. 🎉
