The HUMAN Touch

Did you know that nearly 7 out of 10 of American employees are not engaged in their jobs? Even worse, a quarter of them are actively disengaged with their employers. Don’t take my word for it, checkout this 2015 Gallup Article.

Ok, so…what does this mean? In simple terms, it means that HR, People Operations, Talent, Human Capital, or any department responsible for “people”, needs to re-frame how they view people. The Harvard Business Review (subscription required) was more direct in a past edition — their headline? “It’s Time to BLOW UP HR And Build Something New.”

It is time that HR teams understand that a new social contract of work exists between employees and employers. People no longer want an antiquated experience driven by bureaucratic organizations. They want a genuinely transparent experience where they’re treated like HUMANS, and their motivations heard. They want organizations that partner with them on their professional journey.

“Employees who believe that management is concerned about them as a whole person — not just an employee — are more productive, more satisfied, more fulfilled. Satisfied employees mean satisfied customers, which leads to profitability.” — Anne Mulcahy

What this all comes down to, is that people leaders need to retool with modern technology, modern ideas, get to know their teams, re-envision their core responsibilities and above all, treat people with a HUMAN touch. It’s time to genuinely focus on the biggest challenges people professionals face; engagement, purpose and development.
