Blacxellence — Mahaneela

Meet Mahaneela (Neela). She’s one of the most amazing people around. I’ve known Neela for a couple of years and have seen the quality of her work go up, up and up.

She’s a Photographer, Writer, Filmmaker and Communications Manager working with a variety of clients that include Converse, Nike, i-D magazine, Fader, VSCO and more. You don’t get to work with such a high quality, extensive client list for no reason, it’s because they recognise Neela as a cut above the rest.

What originally drew me towards Neela was this blog post from 2014. The post, titled, ‘If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else’ (big up Booker T. Washington) explores self-care, depression, friendship and inner strength. I read it at a time where I was low and coming to terms with (but not yet accepting) my own poor mental health. I reached out to Neela to thank her and we’ve been in touch ever since.

For her to write that back then, before mental health really gained traction as being a serious topic to talk about, is incredibly powerful.

Neela continues to be open online and shares her various works with us, her audience and I just want to say thank you for being such an inspiration to so many people. I look forward to seeing what you do next.
