If you want the full experience of the island, you must need to try our following recommendations. But don’t be skeptical as some of our balinese experiences include unusual customs and local treatments.
We tried the aerial yoga
As most of you might know it already, Bali is the temple of yoga, to such a point that it became a business and a lifestyle. There are, actually, more people with a yoga mat under the arms in Canggu than a surfboard. There is no balinese village which will not propose you some yoga vinyasa, ashtanga yoga, chakra flow and more yoga classes. Personally, I have the flexibility of a caramel candy and I got easily bored when practicing yoga. It has even the opposite effect on me: I got stressed and it makes me feel hungry.
In Canggu, at the Serenity Guest House, the yoga classes start at 7am and end at 9pm so as Max and I lived around the corner for a month, we decided to give it one more try — but not any yoga class, the aerial yoga.
Aerial yoga is a mix of yoga, pilates and acrobatic positions, practiced with a technical fabric suspended in the air. The exercises helped to work both your back and the flexibility of your legs. It’s not easy to gain confidence, feet in the air and to let yourself going upside down. But when you do, you can succeed in making figures you didn’t think you would be able to do.
We loved this experience so much that we’re actually selling the flying hammock yoga online so you can take a swing at home whenever you want.
We met a Palm Reader
We were hoping to find a palm reader by chance on our path — like you imagine it in any Hollywood movie… We ended up booking an appointment at The Alchemy. You’ll probably spend the 10 first minutes crying — what might be a bit embarrassing but it worth the try. The session lasts around 90min to 3 hours for some and I honestly appreciated it to have someone not spending the entire time looking at their watch.
She does not only read the palms — it would be too simple and too reducing but she also uses two card games I never seen before, but supposedly represent your current state of mind. She doesn’t give detailed indication of what your future look like but keys on where to go, what to do, reflection of you past.
We won’t tell what she told us obviously but from our own experiences and from our look at the end of the session, we knew that she touched something in us and she pointed out some right points. Highly recommended if you want to test something different while in Ubud.
We did a one-week Bamboo Charcoal Treatment
When we met the owner of Takesumi, we were skeptical at first but decided that we could not sell this product online till we experience it ourself. Here is our feedback to our one-week treatment with bamboo charcoal powder.
Activated charcoal is administered in hospitals as emergency treatment for poisoning; as chemicals bind to it, it can help remove them from the body. But, nowadays people are using food grade activated charcoal internally to detox and even as whitener teeth.
Activated bamboo charcoal powder is also good for your skin. This is how it works: because toxins stick to the activated charcoal, it makes a good candidate for a deep cleanser and detoxifier. It’s all-natural and won’t add new chemicals to your skin and hair when you use it. Which means, less for your skin and hair to have negative reactions to’and less risk of your pores being clogged with a new ingredient meant to clean.
The recipe is very simple: put a coffee spoon in a glass of water twice a day for a week and see how your body and skin react.
We experienced Therapeutic Body Treatment
While his back was hurting him, Max booked us a session of therapeutic body treatment with Yanto Hirjanto. Therapeutic body treatment, a fusion of traditional eastern healing coupled with western techniques is a holistic healing method that mostly Kinesiology. Nicknamed “Dr Feelgood”, Yanto practices a combination of therapeutic treatments with relaxing techniques. The result is relief from pain and discomfort.
We both went to meet him for lower back pain and were quite happy with the results. He did some very deep massage and manipulation to even out our body — during a one-hour session. We would not call it a miracle cure but we can see that he has a very special talent — just looking at us and holding both of our hands, he worked out what was wrong with some parts of our body.
