Personal Background and Inspirations:
Q : Can you share a bit about your personal background? How did your upbringing and life experiences influence your writing and career as an author?
A : I was brought up in a typical Indian joint family in a very lively place. Humor has always been a stimulating factor in my family. Growing up, the wisecracks among my family and friends played a crucial role in developing my creativity.
I should mention my grandfather here. He was a small-time writer for regional magazines and even considered giving up his railway job to become a full-time writer. However, he revised his decision based on advice given by the great Kalki Krishnamurthy. So, I believe writing is in my DNA.
Inspiration and Genesis
Q: What inspired you to write “The Deception Moment”? Was there a specific event or moment that sparked the idea for the story?
A : Long story short — the epic, Mahabharata.
I am a huge fan of the Mahabharata and have read various versions of this epic. For a long time, I wanted to write a story that captures the essence of this iconic chronicle. “The Deception Moment” was written in 18 chapters, mirroring the 18 parvas of the Mahabharata. The protagonist, Devavrat Deshpande, is named after the great Bhishma.
Every character in my story has some resemblance to the legendary characters of the Mahabharata. You will find many references and connections in “The Deception Moment” to the monumental Mahabharata.
Character Development
Q: Devavrat Deshpande is a fascinating protagonist. How did you develop his character, and what aspects of his personality were most important for you to convey?
A : As I mentioned, Devavrat is a homage to Bhishma from the Mahabharata. Certain traits of the character are inspired by this legendary epic. Additionally, as a nationalist, I hold immense respect for those who serve India in RAW and the Army. I conducted extensive research on individuals in these noble professions to create a fictional character.
Devavrat is designed to inspire anyone who aspires to be intelligent, courageous, and tactful. Each of us carries a “want-to-be” character within, though external factors may prevent it from being unveiled. Devavrat embodies that aspiration.
Plot and Themes
Q: “The Deception Moment” explores themes like human farming and DNA manipulation. How did you decide on these elements, and what message do you hope to convey through the story?
A : I have always been fascinated by Secret Societies. Human brains are often conditioned to succumb to the influence of powerful individuals. I wanted to explore this idea further: “What if the DNA of humans is manipulated by the powerful beings of this world?” This concept was the foundation of my story even before I began writing it.
As a non-science student, I had to do extensive reading to understand the molecular formulas and DNA strands I used in the book.
Writing Process
Q: Can you walk us through your writing process for “The Deception Moment”, and also “Gauri”? How did you plan and structure both these books which are based on different themes?
A : “Gauri..!!” was a very simple story, a tale from next door. I wrote “Gauri..!!” to see myself in the mirror as an author, and it worked out well. My readers were happy and graciously provided positive reviews all around. I am thankful to them.
However, “The Deception Moment” required extensive research since it was science fiction. Writing science fiction without proper reasoning can be horrendous for readers. Thus, I engaged in indefatigable reading for almost two years before starting the book.
When it comes to different themes, I do not want to fall into a cliched genre and prefer to explore various genres with each book I write. In fact, choosing a different theme for every book gives me the ultimate motivation to write.
Industry Challenges
Q: What has been the major pain point you experienced as an author, and what changes do you wish to see in the publishing industry to address these issues?
A : I wouldn’t necessarily call it a pain point, but I believe traditional publishers should prioritize content quality as well as an author’s popularity. Publishers often pursue popular authors because it makes selling books easier, which is undoubtedly good for business.
However, we must ask ourselves if this truly does justice to the world of literature.
Balancing Profession and Writing
Q: How do you balance your job and profession with your writing career? What strategies do you use to manage your time effectively?
A : I’m trying to balance both. Managing a full-time job and writing fiction stories is like chalk and cheese. However, by God’s grace, unlike many authors, I don’t need a quiet place to write.
As I mentioned, I come from a lively environment, so it’s possible for me to write even in an obnoxious place. Whenever I get the chance, I open my laptop and start penning down the story that I conceptualize while driving, eating, or shopping.
Reader Engagement
Q: How do you want readers to feel once they finish reading “The Deception Moment”? What kind of impact do you hope your book has on them?
A : Ask for Part 2. Lol!!
A legend once said, “My movie is a blockbuster when a fan remembers the scenes the next morning while brushing their teeth.” This is how success is defined. I want my readers to visualize my story as they read, to feel a sense of camaraderie with my characters, and to be enveloped in a melancholy vibe when they finish.
Future Projects
Q: Are you currently working on any new projects or books? Can you give us a hint about what your readers can look forward to next?
A : Yes, my next book is a political thriller. It will be a page-turner, just like my previous works. The book will explore the extent to which conspiracies operate behind the scenes to achieve political triumphs.
It will engage a wide range of audiences and feature all the quintessential flavors of Sathya Sam.
