We interviewed Shruti on her first book, 9 Kitchen Gems for Wholesome Health, and being an ayurvedic doctor in today’s era.

The editorial team at Blessink Mag is dedicated to promoting both new and established authors, helping them reach a wider readership and audience.

Recently, our team connected with Vaidya Shruti Kuchhal, who published her first non-fiction book, 9 Kitchen Gems for Wholesome Health : A Comprehensive Ayurvedic Guide, through Notion press publishing.

This interview delves into her journey as an author, an Ayurvedic doctor and practitioner, and provides insights into her book, explores her writing process, and addresses many intriguing questions that will benefit first-time writers and captivate her readers and beyond.

Let’s take a look at what she had to say:

Personal Background and Inspirations:

Q. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what inspired you to write about Ayurveda and holistic health?
A. I am a fourth-generation Ayurvedic practitioner with a strong academic background. The foundation in Ayurveda was laid by my father, who is well-read and has been involved in manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines and herbal combinations.

After COVID, I noticed that people had become more sensitive to their health and were looking for healthier and more natural ways to take care of themselves.

That’s when I thought a book on Ayurveda would be beneficial, as the acceptance of Ayurveda increased during COVID times.

Journey into Writing:

Q. What led you to start writing, and how did you decide that your first book would be focused on Ayurvedic principles?
A. I always wanted to contribute to my field and to society with a work that could be a legacy. I had reviewed a lot of work by dieticians and nutritionists who focused solely on nutritive value.

I felt there was a lack of authentic Ayurvedic content that could be easily understood by the masses. I wanted to provide a holistic approach to health through Ayurveda.

About the Book:

Q. What inspired the title “9 Kitchen Gems for Wholesome Health”? Can you share a brief overview of what readers can expect from your book?
A. The term “9 gems” or ‘nav ratna’ refers to highly precious elements. The book highlights the health benefits of major kitchen commodities that are commonly found and regularly used.

Since these items are extensively used, they should be used appropriately.

I see the Indian kitchen as a mini-clinic that can address most common ailments. Hence, using these commodities correctly can save us from major health issues.

Readers will learn about these commodities through the lens of Ayurveda.

Writing Process:

Q. Can you describe your writing process for this book? How did you research and organize the content on Ayurvedic practices?
A. Honestly, the process wasn’t very calculated at the start. When the idea was conceived, I had only a vague notion of how to proceed. There were various changes in the format until it was finalized.

I began by seeing myself as a consumer and gradually wrote down common queries for each section. I took opinions from family and friends about the challenges they face regarding common foods in their kitchen.

Questions like, “How do you decide what to use and when to consume?” and “Do you look for health solutions in your kitchen?” were asked.

Based on their responses and needs, the framework for the book was developed.

Challenges and Rewards:

Q. What was the most challenging part of writing this book, and what did you find most rewarding?
A. The most challenging part was also the most rewarding. Connecting every commodity to health and its different realms — spiritual, cultural, and mental — was very challenging.

I had to do extensive research and refer to various classics to provide an authentic view of health.

Ayurveda is spread throughout different texts, so I had to refer to multiple sources to generate the right information.

Personal Practices:

Q. How has your personal experience with Ayurveda influenced the content of your book? Do you follow these Ayurvedic practices in your daily life?
A. As I mentioned, my father laid the foundation of Ayurveda for me. It came to me naturally and is now a part of my daily life.

Additionally, I am involved in manufacturing Ayurvedic medicines and herbal nutraceuticals, so I have closely studied spices, sweets, and salts.

My manufacturing experience has greatly supported and guided me in writing this book.

Impact and Goals:

Q. What do you hope readers will take away from “9 Kitchen Gems for Wholesome Health”? How do you envision your book impacting their lives?
A. The biggest takeaway for readers is that they will start appreciating their kitchens. A well-used kitchen contributes to better health.

I believe in educating readers and guiding them towards health considering their geography.

Not all principles are applicable everywhere. My book deals with knowing what to consume, when to consume, and how to consume, helping readers analyse things from a health perspective.

Future Projects:

Q. Are you currently working on any new projects or books? Can you give us a hint about what your readers can look forward to next?
A. I have many topics in mind, but as I am involved in manufacturing and clinical practice, I haven’t had enough time to streamline my thoughts.

But yes, a few thoughts central to the theme of Ayurveda is something that I would like to materialise in the form of book, or videos, in the future.

To come up with a follow-up to the current book would be an ideal way forward for me as an author.

Advice for Aspiring Authors:

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring authors who are interested in writing about health and wellness, particularly from a traditional or holistic perspective?
A. Always refer to classical texts rather than relying solely on renowned practitioners in the field. You can seek their guidance, but your content should stem from original sources and be backed by references. Aim for authenticity.

Put out good work and aim for a healthier society through your content. If not today, your work will definitely be noticed tomorrow.
