How you approach your career search is the first thing that will set you apart from your competition.

In this webinar that we hosted together with Hadiyah Mujhid we asked Tania Garcia Richardson from Red Hat, Marcia Robinson from The HBCU Career Center and Mike Ambassador Bruny from No More Reasonable Doubt to share their top tips and advice for standing out at every stage of your career search.

In the past you needed to focus on creating a great résumé. Now, not only do you need to add social media to the mix, but there are also multiple ways of applying for jobs, including one that is inspired by NBC’s “The Voice.” In this webinar you hear how GapJumpers’ ‘blind auditions’ are being used by some companies to increase diversity and inclusion. The panel also shares tips and advice for creating a network that will help you to thrive at all stages of your career, and how to avoid common candidate pitfalls to ensure that you make the most of each and every opportunity you have to present yourself.

Resources:

On the webinar Marcia Robinson shared her top tip to ensure that you stand apart from your competition when it comes to both the career search and the interview; Research, research, research. Even before you start applying to a company do your research so that you are clear on what you can bring to the company and the same applies for when you are invited to interview. Here is The HBCU Career Center’s resource guide: Company Research in Three Easy Steps.

Tania Garcia Richardson from Red Hat shared tips on how to show a different level of engagement from your competition. Be curious, be authentic, make sure your LinkedIn profile and résumé include why achievements you have included are important. Both need to show your progression and be robust enough to speak for you when recruiters are conducting passive searches online. These two articles we read recently provide some good insight into how to stand out.

Think networking is a bad word? Think again! Mike Ambassador Bruny shared insights into how to turn around the way that you think about your NET-WORK. In addition he shared his top tips for getting clear on what you have to offer to each and every interaction. We love his “#Hashtags to Handshakes” program and the energy he brings to all interactions. We became friends over Twitter which just goes to show that social media is a powerful tool that can make the difference in your career search. Listen to Mike’s podcasts and pick up a copy of his book Move The Crowd: 30 Days of Hip Hop Affirmations to Change your Life. Mike also mentioned the site Contactually to stay on top of all of your connections.

Anne and Heidi shared how GapJumpers’ ‘blind auditions’ are replacing résumés for companies focused on truly meritocratic hiring and interrupting bias. Here are tips that Anne put together for what to expect when completing a ‘blind audition’. Heidi mentioned the book Never Eat Alone: How to Build a Lifelong Community of Colleagues, Contacts, Friends and Mentors by Keith Ferrazzi as being another helpful resource to get straight on how to make networking work for you.

A huge thank you to Hadiyah, Marcia, Tricia, Mike, Anne and Heidi. Connecting virtually was possible because each one of you is passionate about sharing your knowledge to help others.
