Four Pillars of a Seeker at SRM
Sri Guru defines the 4 values that should radiate from every Seeker on this Path, forming the pillars of the journey
Under the grace and guidance of Sri Guru, SRM is entering its tenth year of establishment. The journey that started in 2010 with a handful of seekers (sadhaks) has transformed into a huge community, spreading across several countries of the globe. People from all walks of life, religion and age are quenching their spiritual thirst from the infinite fountains of bliss, wisdom and love flowing from Sri Guru in the form of Spiritual Discourses (Satsang) and Meditation (Sadhana). All this is touching and transforming millions of people all around. However, this transformation can only be experienced if a person is imbibing some basic fundamentals in his or her behaviour that are the foundation.
Importance of Foundation Pillars
Every religion has some basic foundations or fundamental pillars. For example, in Buddhism, these pillars are Wisdom (Pragya), Virtue (Sheel) and Mindfulness (Dhyan). In Jainism, the five supreme vows that form these pillars are Non-violence (Ahimsa), Truth (Satya), Non-theft (Achaurya), Non-acquisitiveness (Aparigraha) and Celibacy (Brahmacharya). In Sikhism, these fundamentals are Service (Seva), Remembrance (Simran) and Spiritual Discourse (Satsang). A person, following any of these paths needs to strengthen the foundations of that path in himself. Similarly, SRM also has some fundamental pillars for SRM seekers, who are on their spiritual journey with Sri Guru.
In the very first Satsang of this tenth year (2020), Sri Guru explained what all forms the foundation pillars of SRM and what their importance is. Sri Guru directed every SRM seekers to imbibe them to the fullest to make their spiritual journey successful. Let us understand the pillars that forms the constitution of SRM.
Foundation Pillars of SRM
The four foundation pillars that form the fundamental base of SRM are
- Love (Prem) — means “belief of oneness”. It is based on the fact that everything belongs to one fundamental energy and is interconnected.
- Service (Seva) — means “belief in action”. It signifies having thoughts and actions towards helping others in a selfless manner. Without Seva, that sensitivity doesn’t manifest in the heart which is a must to experience the infinite.
- Discipline (Sanyam) — means “discipling the body and the mind”. Unless these are in discipline, it is very difficult to embark the journey towards the subtle and infinite.
- Meditation (Sadhana) — means “going beyond” through various yogic techniques. Sadhana helps one go deeper and deeper and the more one goes deep, the more he starts being one with that infinite.
Goal of SRM
The only goal of SRM is to cultivate these four fundamental pillars in every seeker. The important point is that all these four are required together as a homogeneous mix. The journey cannot be done with any one or few of these. The other important point is that these four things form a circular path. The starting point Love is in the East from where the journey starts like a rising sun. Service is in the North and signifies the visibility and peak like Himalayas. Discipline is in West and signifies the settling of mind, thoughts, desires etc like a setting sun. Meditation in South signifies the strong base and depth that is a must. All these when cultivated together in a synchronised manner help a seeker on the return journey towards the centre, which represents Eternal Conscious Bliss (Sat Chitt Anand) — our true identity.
Responsibility of SRM seekers
All activities at SRM are focused on cultivating these four pillars. Hence, it is essential and required that all SRM seekers acquire these four fundamentals and they get distinctly reflected in their behaviour and personality. The deep desire to stand to and progress on these four traits cannot be possible without the passion and compassion of a living Master. And we all at SRM are the fortunate ones to have such a Master in our lives.
