Mobile development teams are faced with a number of issues throughout the life of their project.

Here are the 5 biggest challenges.

Platform fragmentation

As many platforms as skills.
Are you a native developer? You’ll need iOS and Android devs.
Do you have a hybrid project? You’ll need to look at ReactNative, Flutter, Cordova, etc.
Of course, a developer can combine several technologies, but finding a good developer who masters different languages is possible but not easy.

Le codeur.com has written an article outlining the main mobile technologies.

Optimising performance

The challenges of digital responsibility and programmed obsolescence mean that mobile devices are limited resources.
The whole team needs to ensure that performance is optimised, and this starts at the very beginning of the project.

Poor performance leads to a poor user experience and premature ageing of your mobile. Everything you don’t want!

To give you an idea of the indicators that need to be monitored, I’ve attached a checklist of indicators that are essential for an eco-responsible mobile project.
OK, I’m interested!

Testing and compatibility

Mobile applications need to be tested on a variety of devices, screen sizes and OS versions to ensure that they work properly and offer a consistent experience.

Even if teams don’t have a fleet of physical devices, cloud-based device solutions exist. They offer a wide variety of devices for testing applications. Although this software does not replace physical tests, it does help to refine QA work.

Browserstack is just one example.

Data security

A new regulation or a pen-test (penetration test) can cause you to lose your delivery deadline.
The issue is protection against malicious attacks, leaks or breaches of confidentiality.

The security of applications and users takes priority over everything else in the project. Yes, I did say everything else.
You wouldn’t want an application to be withdrawn from the store or be in the crosshairs of compliance…

I’m sharing with you the CNIL’s action plan for mobile RGPD.

Optimising the use of storage

This is one of the aspects of eco-design. Mobile devices have limited storage capacity, so the team must ensure that the application does not take up too much space.

A slowdown in navigation or a loading time that is too long would be detrimental to the mobile user experience.

BONUS! One last challenge :

User engagement and retention

With the fierce competition on app stores, it can be difficult to attract and retain users.
The team needs to focus on optimising the user experience, app responsiveness, frequent updates, personalisation and listening to user feedback to encourage engagement and retention.

In this free workbook, I help you to optimise your mobile user journey, with video support in the training course Perfecting your user experience in less than 3 hours.

It illustrates the workbook with examples, so it’s a good complement.
