Massive Megamall Site Developers Poised To Start Excavation This Month
The Logan Square site has sat empty since last March when developers tore down the Discount Megamall.
LOGAN SQUARE — Enjoy the unobstructed views of passing trains along the Megamall site while they last.
Excavation on the massive redevelopment project, spanning the 2500 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, is slated to begin June 11, according to Paul Sajovec, chief of staff for Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd).
The development, dubbed Logan’s Crossing, calls for 220 apartments and a small-format Target on the ground floor. XSport Fitness and Jewel-Osco were expected to be tenants at one time, but plans with XSport ended up falling through and Jewel hasn’t been part of the conversation since Target was announced. As of April, the residential units were expected to be complete by November 2019.
It’s unclear if there will be a groundbreaking ceremony, or if the construction timeline has changed. A representative for Fifield Cos., one of the developers behind the project along with Terraco Real Estate, declined to comment. Sajoevc said no other information was provided beyond the date of excavation.
The massive site has sat empty since last March when developers tore down the Discount Megamall. The indoor flea market lasted more than 20 years despite being slapped with more than 100 building code violations, a yearlong shutdown, a move by the city to seize it via eminent domain and a 2007 fire that reduced the showroom space to less than a third of its original size.
