Beloved Mexican Bakery in Logan Square Closes After Years Beneath Blue Line
LOGAN SQUARE — A Mexican bakery that has called the storefront under the California Blue Line station home for more than a decade has closed.
A sign was posted to the door of Panaderia La Central, 2218 N. California Ave., Monday, notifying customers of the closure and directing them to another location at 3911 W. North Ave.
It’s unfortunate news for loyal customers like Juan Barajas, 45, who went to the bakery twice a week to pick up treats for his family, including his two kids, ages 3 and 5.

Barajas said he liked the flavors and the culture of the bakery, which served everything from conchas, Mexican sweet rolls, to freshly baked French bread. Many of the baked goods cost just 50 cents each.
“It’s sad,” Barajas said, gazing at the shuttered bakery covered in brown paper.
It is unclear exactly how many years Panaderia La Central was open on California, or why the bakery closed. Barajas, who has lived in Logan Square for 27 years, said the bakery has been there as long as he can remember.
Attempts to reach owners Monday night were unsuccessful.
