Monthly Update [August]
Hi guys!
Welcome to our monthly review, August has been a great month, with progress on all fronts. We’ve got lots to share! Read our July monthly update and what progress has been made since https://bit.ly/2AouVla .
block3.community
block3.community meetup season is upon us and ready to commence in September across both Nottingham and London. Since 2016 we have been striving to showcase the best ideas and teams from the world of blockchain. We have been fortunate to have welcomed the likes of Coinbase and Waves Platform to our stage and we are committed to maintaining the calibre of projects we present. We have 3 huge companies joining us over the remaining months of the year, so keep your eyes peeled.
To kick things off, we are excited to announce and welcome Wanchain to Nottingham in September, who will be introducing WanLabs (Wanchain’s blockchain Incubator) to the community. Sachin Raoul will be discussing ‘What makes a great blockchain project?’ and ‘What do investors look for in a blockchain project?’
This will be showcased at Nottingham Trent University on Wednesday September 26th @ 18:30 and will also be streamed on social media (details posted closer to the event) We look forward to seeing you all there: https://www.meetup.com/block3/
Cosmos Network
As we announced last month block3.community runs a validator node on the Cosmos Network. We are excited to further our partnership with Cosmos Network and help fly the flag for them here in the UK. Earlier this month testnet gaia-7005 ended. After 187k+ blocks our @block3_co validator missed just 177 blocks! We contributed votes to an impressive 99.91% of blocks (#17 for uptime). We know why we missed the blocks and subsequently implemented fixes.
We are now #3 Validator for uptime which is great progress and 150k blocks into the Cosmos gaia-8001 testnet. Happy to be providing stable uptime so everyone can run their tests ahead of #Cosmos #GameOfSteaks.
Hackathons
Hackathons and Workshops — we will also be holding workshops and hackathons over the coming months and are looking for contributors who want to get involved and support in the organisation of these events. block3 and block3.community both stand for advancing learning within this space whilst also making blockchain more accessible to everyone.
block3
Rebrand — Our long awaited rebrand is underway. When we launched block3, we led with a deliberately broad offering as we wanted to understand the needs of this early industry and where people and companies needed support. We are now excited to share our rebrand with you in the coming weeks as it will truly showcase our vision and purpose within the blockchain world.
Security Tokens are coming!
The likes of Harbour and Polymath are doing a great job in the US at bringing the promise of Security Tokens to light, but we feel that more can be done in this space; particularly surrounding the compliance and legislative frameworks around a given asset.
block3 are working on a joint venture with our (for now unnamed) partner, to create a consortium effort to build upon the early developments in this space and bring Security Tokens to a wider audience. More on our developments here next month! Learn more about Security Tokens here.
Beyond CryptoKitties
We are really excited by what could be achieved with Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT’s). This technological breakthrough promises more than just collectable Cats and with our partners we are working on projects to show how ‘unique’ tokens can be created to represent the digital twins of a range of real-world and digital assets and objects. From Property, Land, Diamonds, Art, Livestock, University Degrees, Identity Documentation, Digital Collectables, In-Game Purchases, Software Licensing, Tourist Attractions, The use-cases and possibilities are endless…
block3 are exploring many different avenues and applications for Non-Fungible Tokens. Drop us a message if you would like to learn more. For an introduction you can start here.
For Mainstream Adoption, Blockchain Needs Users!
block3’s engineering team have been busy building the engine for a secure data storage application for the consumer market which will be announced soon. This project has really impressed us with their focus on consumer need & value, and how simple and usable their application will be. For blockchain DApps (Decentralised Applications) to succeed, they will need users — and to gain users, you need a great product. Too many projects and businesses in the blockchain space think that by just building their application on a ‘blockchain’ creates sufficient differentiation and competitive advantage. It does not. It is exciting to see and support a project that is building a great product which solves a real consumer problem, that just happens to interface with a blockchain.
A final thought
And that brings us to the end of our August Update. As you can see, it’s been another action-packed month at block3. New projects, new frontiers that are being explored, and gearing up block3.community for ‘meetup season’. Watch out for our September update, which will feature many more announcements.
Until next time.
The block3 team.
