The term “metaverse,” which has become a popular and widely used term in the fields of technology, commerce, and finance, is perplexing, debatable, and influenced by the goals of those who use it. Although it might be unfamiliar to some, the idea itself has been around for about 30 years.

Metaverse

The word “metaverse,” a combination of “meta” and “universe,” was first used by American science fiction author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 book Snow Crash. Its literal meaning is “beyond the universe.” People in the story utilize the metaverse to escape from a dismal future world.

But over the last 30 years, the technology sector has gradually built up the framework for a real-world metaverse. Internet use has increased steadily throughout the world. Due to the popularity of online gaming, which often reaches tournament levels, it is now feasible to imagine and implement complex digital avatars, transferable digital assets, and even virtual real estate.

However, many people are still confused by the idea of the metaverse, which raises the question. What exactly is the metaverse?

What is the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is a virtual environment in which users may participate in real-time simulated situations. Additionally, it serves as a place where you can collaborate and interact with those who are not physically there with you. You may socialize with your pals, go to work, play, study, shop, create, and more.

To put it simply, we can say that the Metaverse is a virtual environment where everyone can express themselves like the real world.

People use avatars to represent themselves, connect with one another, and virtually expand the community in the metaverse. In the metaverse, digital cash is used to purchase a variety of products, including clothing, as well as shields and weapons for video games. Using a virtual reality headset and controllers, users may also enjoyably and aimlessly traverse the metaverse.

Types of Metaverse

The metaverses of today differ in their structure. Instead of referring to a decentralized world, many of them focus more on “virtual space” types. It’s crucial to differentiate between traditional metaverses, also known as web2 metaverse and blockchain metaverses, or more specifically, web3 metaverse. However, there are still differences within these categories since not all web3 metaverses are decentralized worlds.

Centralized Metaverse

A centralized metaverse is a virtual environment that is owned and governed by a single entity. These virtual worlds are often off-limits to the general public and are utilized by the organization to advertise its goods and interests. This is the web2 version of the metaverse.

The centralized metaverse runs on a centralized system and does not include blockchain technology in its workings. In other words, they are virtual spaces managed by a single company that stores user data. In these worlds, the player has an avatar with whom he will travel through the game.

Examples of centralized metaverses include the video game Roblox, the fictional SIMs, Invisible to Visible by Nissan and Meta by Facebook.

The primary problem with centralized metaverses is that only one entity has power over them. This implies that a single person or entity may seize total authority over the metaverse and decide how it should be run.

Decentralized Metaverse

A decentralized metaverse is a virtual world built on the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) system. Decentralized metaverses, in contrast to centralized metaverses, are governed by their users rather than a single organization. Each user who has a metaverse token assumes a decision-making function in the management of the virtual world.

The decentralized metaverse is based on the blockchain, and each virtual world has its own cryptocurrency-based virtual economy. Since it more closely resembles what the metaverse is — a free world for everyone — the decentralized metaverse is the most popular type of metaverse.

The idea of wealth redistribution makes more sense on decentralized platforms since the user can regain control over what is rightfully his. A content producer, for instance, will be able to monetize his work on these sites. The idea of “play-to-earn,” “create-to-earn,” and “engage-to-earn” kinds of earning mechanisms are most evident in these metaverses.

Decentraland, The Sandbox, Axie Infinity Metaverse, and Battle Infinity, just to mention a few, are examples of decentralized metaverses.

The role of NFTs in the metaverse

A Non-Fungible Token (NFT) is a virtual token that keeps track of the owner’s ownership information on the blockchain. Because each token contains unique information that cannot be duplicated or swapped out for another, each token is unique.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) play a big role in the usefulness and popularity of the metaverse, such as:

  • A digital deed or evidence of ownership that may be purchased or sold in the metaverse is provided to the owner via an NFT.
  • NFTs allow users to participate more actively in the metaverse via gaming.
  • NFTs’ non-fungible public immutability ownership records may help make it simpler for businesses to support social interactions in the metaverse.

Application of the Metaverse

Like the actual world, metaverses offer a lot of promise for many uses. The following areas are when metaverse is useful.

Healthcare

Healthcare applications of the metaverse have created new avenues for providing therapies with better results at lower prices. Patients and physicians may communicate in virtual 3D clinics under the umbrella of telemedicine and telehealth, a notion made popular by the Metaverse after the pandemic.

Another Metaverse application in Healthcare is Therapy which allows users to escape to a calm virtual setting when experiencing anxiety or panic.

Gaming

One of the main and fundamental backers of the Metaverse technology is reportedly the gaming industry. Through the use of this technology, people may communicate with one another within a single, interoperable environment. An example of a metaverse gaming project is Sorare.

Tourism and Travel

One of the Metaverse’s most cutting-edge use cases is virtual tourism. Here, the technology enables virtual travel, which is a plus for users who are unable to travel long distances. You can experience being present virtually in the desired location with lifelike effects thanks to the use of the metaverse in the travel and tour industry.

TravelZoo intends to introduce the first metaverse-based virtual travel experiences.

Education

The Metaverse’s potential for education and learning is as exciting as its other uses. Our learning experience has been elevated to a new level of quality thanks to VR and the effects of Metaverse.

Enhanced and superior knowledge resources are now available for students to use while watching live experiments. For instance, Microsoft’s Mesh platform allows faculty, staff, and students to communicate using 3D avatars.

Real estate

Metaverse can help the real estate industry function effectively. Due to the availability of Metaverse property tour options, both clients and realtors can avoid making time-consuming trips to numerous properties.

Potential buyers can tour the properties in the Metaverse in real-time and look at all of their options. Blockchain technology can also be used to guarantee the validity of a land deed.

Entertainment and social media

A long-standing idea called the “metaverse for social media” has completely changed how audiences engage with online entertainment.

Virtual clones and digital avatars have now become popular ways for users to communicate. For instance, Facebook has already rebranded as Meta, which is a clear indication of the significant business opportunities in the digital media industry.

Conclusion

Because of how quickly the world is changing and how quickly technology is developing, the Metaverse will soon become an immense part of our daily lives. Although early Metaverse prototypes are already being tested in several industries, it is now time for businesses to move forward and adopt Metaverse technology.
