The Deal with Minecraft And NFT Worlds
While many traditional online games have begun to incorporate the play-to-earn model, bringing in NFTs and Cryptocurrencies to attract new players, we have Minecraft banning the use of the NFTs in games as non-fungible tokens have been tagged as- “causing scarcity and exclusion.”
This was after Minecraft developer Mojang Studios announced its decision to ban the integration of NFTs into its game on Wednesday, July 20th. According to the company, removing NFTs is intended to “ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content.”
In a blog post titled “MINECRAFT AND NFTS,” they go on to explain that non-fungible tokens and their dependency on blockchain technology has led to artificially or fraudulently inflated selling prices, along with the problems of unreliability, security issues and lack of intrinsic values.
It is to this effect that the company has rejected blockchain technologies and NFTs, revoking their usage on client and server applications and in-game content.
While this news came as a shock to some players who suffered losses, it had a more particular effect on the crypto group built on the Ethereum (ETH) network- NFT Worlds, who have been working hard for months, building a crypto-economy on top of a collection of the randomized seeds needed to make specific Minecraft maps.
The ban saw a plummet in the value of NFT Worlds’ token- WRLD dropping down 70% and NFTs tied to “world seeds,” slump from 3 ETH ($4,500) to 1.4 ETH ($2,100) in price.
Following a written statement, a screenshot shared on NFT Worlds’ Twitter page, explained that the decision made by Mojang Studios had been “without warning”, explaining that it presented itself as a backwards step in innovation.
The screenshot goes on to explain alternative options, should delegations with decision makers within the Minecraft policy enforcement team yield no positive result, they would resort to building their version of Minecraft-like game engine & games platform, or developing a “GameFi as a service” platform.
However, all hope is not lost.
According to an updated Twitter thread on NFT Worlds’ page, they announced the plan to create a new open game and platform incorporating the core mechanisms of Minecraft, albeit with the development and modernization they have rejected.
The new NFT Worlds’ game will have the look and feel for familiarity to seasoned Minecraft users, there will be changes in the game mechanics, graphics, performance optimizations and overall improvements to provide a more enriching and immersive player experience.
“While the playstyle, look and feel of this will be very familiar to Minecraft players; the game mechanics, graphics, performance optimizations and overall improvements will usher in a more accessible, ownable and enjoyable playing experience.
Game access will be 100% free for players and there will never be any credit card pay barriers for content. NFT Worlds was built on the idea that all players should have access to earning, purchasing and owning items and content through in-game play mechanics and currency rewards.”
The statement explains.
Nevertheless, Minecraft does not intend to do away with blockchain technology completely. Their statement, via the blog post also goes on to note that,
“We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure that the above principles are withheld and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming.”
Although, there are no plans for implementing blockchain technology now or in the near future.
