Mess to Masterpiece; Second-guessing First Impressions in Blockchain Gaming
While trawling through #Gaming posts on Medium, I randomly came across Blockchain Gamer biz describing the unison of Blockchain & Gaming as a “messy collision.”
Honestly, it made me upset at first; seeing writers with some degree of influence and heavy interest in the space seemingly attaching negative connotations to Blockchain Gaming. I was a bit bummed that they apparently couldn’t see how much progress gaming startups like Blockade Games have been making lately.
It occurs to me now that the “messy collision” descriptor is probably a hangover from the initial impression many of us had of blockchain games and even Altcoins in general, where eager ICO founders and project developers were essentially crowbarring blockchain builds into their games for no other reason than wanting to ride the cash-train; the blockchain bandwagon.
As I delved further into the prolific work of BlockchainGamer.Biz, I was relieved to learn that I was totally wrong in my first impression of them as an antagonist. While their writers are able to remain impartial or even play devil’s advocate, their overall stance on blockchain games has actually transitioned in the same way as it has for so many of us; from skepticism, through acceptance, to optimism. I then stumbled upon some pieces they’ve written that are close to my heart. I also noticed they’ve been researching and writing Gaming content for a lot longer than me and, I’ll admit, they’re way better at what they do!
Progressing from pieces like this, in April 2018:
To this, in September 2018:
It becomes obvious that the writers from BlockchainGamer.Biz have naturally progressed from a position of necessary scrutiny to one of excited revelry, like so many others in the industry.
So it’s safe to say I jumped the gun. I’m a bit of a sensitive soul sometimes, but I can admit when I’m wrong. This is why it’s so important to DYOR in all walks of life, not just in Crypto. I took some time to dig a little deeper, instead of getting overly worked up by what upset me at first glance, and I‘m glad I did. As a result, I’ve stumbled upon a group of the best Blockchain Gaming Reporters in the industry:
Blockchain Gamer Biz
To the team @ Blockchain Gamer biz, I know I can learn a lot from you. It’s astounding that you don’t have a big following here on Medium yet. Maybe it would help if you update the local slogan to suit the website’s one, highlighting your dedication to “illuminating and explaining the world of blockchain technology as applied in the games space.”
Regardless, keep up the awesome work! And thank you for the pieces like these that you’ve already shared about Neon District, to-date:
I’m stoked to find external articles like these. I’d also like to extend a thank you from the team at Blockade Games, we hope to see more ND content covered by your reporters in the future!
Writer’s note.
Just as it was inevitable for my mess of a mind to swiftly find peace in writing this piece, I believe we’re rapidly progressing from a point where blockchain in gaming is considered “messy,” to a time and a place where it is harmonious, seamless, and even necessary in the creation of many modern gaming masterpieces.
