Doge running free in The Ledger of Szabo

In preparation for launching The Ledger of Szabo next week, we’re letting anyone create their own tradable character NFTs that are playable within the game universe. You may recall the shoutout from Vitalik about integrating Lightning Network payments with Ethereum smart contracts — well, it’s going live next week with The Ledger of Szabo!

What is “The Ledger of Szabo”?

The Ledger of Szabo is an homage to the original Legend of Zelda by Nintendo, released in 1986 for the NES. This is the biggest and final game of The Pineapple Arcade, which will launch next week with a whole slew of puzzles with Bitcoin and Ethereum prizes ready to be discovered and cracked.

At Blockade Games, we love to experiment with new ways for players to interact with blockchain technology. As part of The Ledger of Szabo, we’re letting players create their own in-game characters — just like Doge above — that you can use to play through the game and hunt for the cryptocurrency treasures that await.

Your in-game characters will be regular, tradable NFTs, so you can buy, sell and trade them just like any other blockchain asset. And any of the character NFTs you create and own will let you play The Ledger of Szabo, which releases next week.

What is an NFT?

An NFT is a non-fungible token, a blockchain-backed digital asset that you can own with your cryptocurrency wallet. NFTs can be freely traded, bought and sold on blockchains such as Ethereum.

Asset Folder:

Please try to maintain the folder structure of the “Character Example” folder. Be sure to read all of the sections below before you begin your sprite creation journey. Most importantly: Good Luck, Have Fun!

Movements:

Character movement sprites are 16x16, except for the attacking movement which is 16x28 for up and down attacks and 28x16 for left and right attacks. The images should be saved in the PNG image format on a transparent background.

Each direction (down, up, left, right) has three images: standing still, left foot forward, and right foot forward. The animation will cycle through four frames: stand, left foot, stand, right foot. Attacks are single frames.

Example Character, “Neil”

Colors:

You can use any colors that you like for your character! However, it is worth mentioning that the game itself uses the NES color palette, which is provided in the above Asset Folder.

Sprite Software:

Online Tools:

  1. Piskel: https://www.piskelapp.com/ (Our personal recommendation)
  2. Pixel Art: https://www.pixilart.com/

Programs:

  1. AesSprite: https://www.aseprite.org/
  2. GraphicsGale: https://graphicsgale.com/us/

Rules:

No offensive, inappropriate, or copyrighted artwork will be accepted into the game. If you are not sure if something is allowed, ask before you make. We reserve the right to deny any submission for any reason.

If we deny a submission, we will respond with the opportunity for you to submit an updated set of assets.

IMPORTANT: All sales are final, and if you sell or transfer your asset, you will only receive payment for the direct sale, but will not receive any cut of the secondary sales.

Submission:

We may soon provide an automatic, decentralized submission process — however, we still have to build this infrastructure. In the meantime, you can submit your assets directly to us, and we’ll create your NFT, assign the game assets, and send it to you as soon as we can!

For any assets we receive before the game goes live next week, we’ll mint and provide for you as soon as we’ve finalized the game contract and prepare to release the game.

Custom NFTs are currently being sold for 0.05 ETH (about $10 USD). Please send the ETH to the following address:

0x3Dc09a15C6aFa877B52fC342140660f3C8114502

You must pay in advance before we will create the NFT and send it to you.

IMPORTANT: To help protect buyers, we will only send NFTs to the Ethereum address from which you send us the ETH.

Submit your NFT design submission to: ledgerofszabo@neondistrict.io

And include the following information:

  • Folder with all of the Character NFT assets
  • Name for your Character
  • The Ethereum address that you paid us from

Well that’s it!

We will publish another article when the game launches for more details on gameplay, puzzles, and prizes.

Go out, create, and have fun, and we’ll see you in the world of the Ledger of Szabo next week!
