Blockchain at Mason is a student-run organization founded in late 2018 at George Mason University. Six months in, we wanted to share who we are, what we have planned, and the motivation behind this movement. Our goal is to act as the resource hub for all things blockchain and cryptocurrency as well as support entrepreneurial student ventures. We are passionate about bringing blockchain technology to the masses through education, research & development, & collaboration.

Why Do It?

We found blockchain and went down the rabbit hole of cryptocurrency only through self education and finding common communities to learn and grow from. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn about these new technologies, without having to go through the journey alone. We strive to create a community that allows peers to explore with creativity interact with one another with the proper resources. Technology is evolving at a rapid pace — having different thoughts, opinions, and ideas helps everyone learn better.

Blockchain still remains a nascent emerging technology that has been one of the fastest growing industries in 2018. It has shown promise in disrupting trust paradigms in most industries - due to the unique properties of decentralization, censorship resistance, and open-source applications. Blockchain represents a transformative shift in the way we think about payments, ownership, security, data-storage, identities, and who and how we trust. Web 2.0 represented an important shift in democratizing and making information accessible to anyone. It embodies the world we are familiar with today — Facebook, YouTube, Netflix all rose during this phase. We see this as a massive opportunity for growth and potential for individuals to be at the forefront of this movement in building Web 3.0 — a user centric model that will give individuals more freedom, interconnectivity, and ubiquity.

How We Do It

As new technologies emerge, knowledge gaps also arise. The challenge is to educate with accurate information and best practices. It’s also essential that we take a bottom-up approach which means starting from the basics and then creating different learning paths to keep students excited and interested. We’re able to provide resources and opportunities to students by working with global blockchain organizations and companies. We plan on having frequent meetings, hackathons, virtual conferences, and projects with other clubs.
