The rise of blockchain “Proof of Ownership” solutions — helping NFT utility proliferate!

Earlier in the year I dived into TokenProof and how their solution adds a layer of abstraction to deliver a frictionless IRL (in real life) ticketing experience for NFT holders. Pretty cool!

Today we are going to look at a broader list of proof of ownership solutions that have been built upon what some refer to as the accessibility layer (the layer between user and blockchain where improved and agnostic experiences can intersect) and assess their roles and the value they are providing.

TokenProof
I dug into this in detail in my “Tokenproof — Ticketing the Web3 way is now a reality and it has benefits!” post that had great reception from readers, pinners and the TokenProof team. Feel free to read although I will summarise this service below.

TokenProof provides a realtime in real life ticketing solution that verifies on chain ownership to validate access and ensure high fidelity attendees by prohibiting anyone without a valid token. A user can connect their wallet to the TokenProof app https://tokenproof.xyz/ and verifiers (brands/NFT collections) can distribute tickets via the TokenProof app. On entry token ownership is verified in realtime.

This can be used with an NFT specifically issued as a ticket or with any NFT collection. It’s versatile and this is the decision of the verifier.

They have plans to grow their service to provide online auth solutions too.

Collab.land
Collab.land provides an online ownership verification solution and has served communities with tokenised gating since 2020. With over 6 million wallets verified and supporting over 40k communities between Discord and Telegram if you engage in Web3 communities you will more than likely be familiar with this product!

Collab.Land services DAOs, NFT communities, brands, and creators of projects big and small. If your project has a token, we are ready to support your community management needs.

It’s core products are Discord and Telegram bots that verify ownership to enable communities to issue special TGRs (token-granted roles) for community members that own particular assets. For example if you hold a particular token collab.land can grant to access to a private channel of only those holders.

Safety first, proof of ownership systems remove the need to sign your wallet when joining a community.

Collab.Land is an automated community management tool that curates membership based on token ownership. We begin with initial verification, confirming that each prospective member possesses the required token(s) to join and participate in your community, and follow up with routine checks to confirm members continuously satisfy your requirements.

The project plans to launch its own DAO, add advanced bot customisation, API/SDK integrations and analytics in its roadmap.

Guild.xyz
Guild.xyz is a similar member management platform providing an online ownership verification solution. They promote themselves as a tool for platformless membership management. It has a broader feature set than collab.land which includes APIs to integrate token gated access and full Guild capability. On the guild.xyz site they have a page for each guild which displays all the available roles active. Checkout the Arbitrum page to see the depth and detail of roles that can be created: https://guild.xyz/arbitrum

Guild puts their offering as:

Automated membership management for the platforms your community already uses.

Bring your community to your favourite communication platforms, management tools or games. Create exclusive levels in your community and manage them with blockchain assets.

The Guildhall where all guilds have profile pages with role criteria.

RTFKT
RTFKT is pushing forward the frontiers of what Web3 and NFTs become at this moment. This differs as its not a community tool like the others, what they have created is a proof system that links a physical item on chain to provide item provenance. From scanning an NFC chip embedded in the physical shoe or garment, that redirects you to the RTFKT website where you login and connect to your blockchain wallet that holds the forging token used to claim the physical asset. From here you can link the garment to this token on chain and it creates a product page linking this item with product information and in the future will detail full provenance including ownership and physical item linking.

See these examples of linked phygital products:

Summarisation
Here are some proof of ownership solutions building a brighter safer future for Web3 and NFT ownership.

Inherently the value in these solutions is they provide clearer, safer and better user experiences.

Early blockchain ticketing focussed too closely on chain. You may have read some of the articles debunking blockchain ticketing entirely. These abstracted solutions provide the right balance to deliver a great user experience whilst ensuring on chain validation connecting the verified ownership to off chain utility and experiences.

With household brands set to enter the space in 2023 we are bound to see agnostic experiences that minimise users exposure to blockchain wallets. But that doesn’t take away for the need of these proof of ownership middlemen because they provide the communication channel to connect on chain ownership to off chain utilities. “Blockchain to Brand” interoperability if you like! And one that naturally supports cross chain collaborations and promotes security by minimising wallet signings.

With utility tipped to become the primary NFT feature as rampant price speculation fades away this could be an busy year for proof of ownership innovation!

It will be exciting to see how this evolves in “23.
That’s a wrap, all the best for 2023 and happy new year! 💕
