After the Status Hackathon (October 26–28) in Prague, Czech Republic, MakerDAO and Status Wallet co-hosted a fundraiser for the Blockchain Education Network. During the hackathon, Dai was distributed to each participant.

MakerDAO — Maker is comprised of a stablecoin, collateral loans, and decentralized governance.

Dai by MakerDAO — Dai is an asset-backed, hard currency for the 21st century. The first decentralized stablecoin on the Ethereum blockchain.

Status Wallet — Chat, browse and transact securely in an open source community committed to bringing the power of Ethereum and a more distributed internet to your pocket.

Blockchain Education Network (BEN) — Empowering students all around the world to learn and become teachers of the blockchain revolution.

In the ecosystem of the fundraiser for BEN ~ 1 drink = 1 Dai.

BEN’ s Goal 400 Dai. Raised 130% of the goal ~ 520 Dai.

The Dappy Hour

People paying with Dai!

On a Pirate Ship in the middle of Prague, a group of blockchain enthusiasts gathered experimenting with the emerging technology. The idea was that as a person entered the ship he or she would already have Dai in their Status Wallet. He or she would then go to the bar, order a drink, scan a QR code, and pay 1 Dai from their Status Wallet. All of the proceeds would be donated to BEN and would support BEN Student Travel Vouchers.

The pirates arrived early with their Status Wallets already loaded with Dai and ETH for gas. These people were the innovators, the hackathon winners, the people who studied the event before coming, the people who stood by the MakerDAO desk at the hackathon asking for more Dai, the movers and shakers. They were off to the races buying drinks for 1 Dai. And then buying rounds for friends!

Passed 100 Dai 😄

Those who came next were the early adopters. They had downloaded the Status Wallet and had 5 Dai in their wallet. But they needed ETH for gas to make transactions.

Enter the BEN Human Faucets — Melissa, Erick, and Sathya. We went around the ship giving people enough ETH for gas to make transactions.

Then came the majority. Some people were downloading the Status Wallet App on the ship. Others were asking their friends to buy them drinks. The ship was packed. And with so much going on — the WiFi crashed. Too many cryptocurrency transactions under one roof!

And so for a hot second people got drinks without paying Dai. The night continued and the enthusiasts waited patiently for their Status Wallets to load and pay for drinks with Dai.

We had facilitated over 160 transactions in Dai raising a total of 520 Dai. We had people from Europe, America, India, and so many other countries. The conversations were healthy as enthusiasts talking about how to use Dai in their own ecosystems, or how to use Dai at their next event.

Cryptocurrencies are borderless. And that’s the coolest part — Dai can be used in ANY ecosystem.

The Crypto Wishing Well

In July, three BEN students made the first Crypto Wishing Well, a visual block explorer that displayed Ethereum balances in creative new ways. BEN maintained the project and we set up the second Crypto Wishing Well at this Dappy Hour. We had a big TV set up and coded up a simple dashboard with the Dai balance proudly and cleanly displayed in bold. People were excited to see BEN’s DAI balance go up as more and more donations came in through the night. We also had LED lights set up that would flash whenever a new transaction came in. With the Crypto Wishing Well, people got instant visual gratification whenever they donated.

The Crypto Wishing Well

To all those who donated. Thank you. To Jessica Salomon and Sean Brennan for spearheading this collaboration. Thank you. To the whole MakerDAO team. Thank you. To the at-large crypto community for inspiring us. Thank you.
