Director of Global Development of the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA), Flavien Defraire, joins BGA Gold Member, Magic Media, to talk about what the BGA does and how we can raise awareness of what is happening in the gaming space, which they do by showing what their members are doing and capitalizing on their expertise, as well as off their members’ visibility, education and networking on and offline.

What is the Blockchain Game Alliance?

The Blockchain Game Alliance started in 2018; Several entrepreneurs came together to gather professionals who understand blockchain and gaming to raise awareness and collaborate on how blockchain could help gaming bring new opportunities and a stronger player experience.

The Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) is a non-profit organization that provides networking opportunities and visibility to its members through both online and offline events. The BGA capitalizes on its members’ experience and what they are developing to share knowledge and educate on a broad range of areas of the blockchain.

The BGA is chain agnostic and supports member projects across the gaming ecosystem. There is a large diversity of possibilities, and we want to support projects across the gaming ecosystem utilizing the chain best suited to their projects, said BGA Director of Global Development, Flavien Defraire.

What are the common challenges for members?

Legitimacy for smaller projects, BGA offers visibility through activities through one of the many events we are part of, such as NFT Paris or GDC, at which we will be present this week, showcasing several projects and game demos.

The BGA provides platforms that enable quick interaction both online and offline. Smaller projects often face challenges in establishing legitimacy, and this is where the BGA can support them by offering visibility through various activities and an extensive network of members. Online, we host a number of events and panel discussions and have a dedicated Telegram and Discord community which enables members to network, and the BGA shares opportunities for collaboration, features, and speaking opportunities. The BGA is highly active at offline events and attends several key conferences and events throughout the year. Members can demo their games at the BGA booth or showcase their infrastructure projects, which enables them to gain credibility and visibility, and validate their Proof of Concept.

The BGA also produces a yearly report based on a survey of its members, outlining some of the largest challenges and visions across the blockchain gaming ecosystem. According to respondents and members of the BGA, one of the biggest challenges faced by members was onboarding players and facilitating entry to web3 games. These are areas that many projects are working to solve, and there are already numerous options that weren’t available a year ago. It is still early, and the tech is advancing rapidly. Educating users on ownership also came up as a topic, and this is something we are all working on, as the industry is still so young. You can read the full BGA Report 2022 here.

What are the biggest advantages of blockchain for gaming?
When asked what is the biggest advantage of blockchain for gaming, without hesitation, Flavien responds:

“The ownership of digital assets — With blockchain, game developers can integrate ownership of digital assets. As a long-time player of traditional games, it’s clear that players invest a huge amount of time in the game, and up until now, this doesn’t translate into real life but blockchain massively changes that, and this is one of the greatest advantages for games.”

What are the other key considerations for games when it comes to the different blockchains out there?

The most important is scalability, the ability to handle millions of transactions in real-time, which is specific to gaming. Secondly, security is an important consideration. Games require robust security architecture and to be resistant to attacks to protect their users and their assets.

Interoperability enables games to leverage the use of smart contracts across one chain in particular. A lot of games want to capitalize on one particular chain’s ecosystem. The final aspect is community support, so that game developers have good support from the network of developers and the chain they are building.

Where do you see this part of the gaming industry going?
Even five years after the BGA was first created, we are still in the early days and have a lot of innovation, but the main positive thing is that more and more big game companies believe in this ecosystem and how it can help gaming. We will see more fun games, in my opinion, and we are starting to see more and more games, especially mobile games, as it is a great gateway for players to easily understand blockchain — I think we will see some exciting things coming up in 2023!
