Symfoni, together with the University of Oslo, The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI), The City of Oslo, and other key partners have collaborated to revolutionize the skilled worker immigration process. In a remarkable demonstration of digital wallets and blockchain technology, nine professionals were able to relocate and start their jobs at the University of Oslo in just three days — a phenomenal 99% decrease in processing time compared to conventional methods.

“Digital wallet technology is a game-changer. This enables a more citizen-centric, transparent, and efficient data flow,” said Jon Ramvi, the technological lead behind the project. Digital wallet methodologies have proven essential in overcomming conventional limitations, signaling a paradigm shift in public service operations.

The University was the initial issuer of these digital credentials, while UDI served as the verifier. Symfoni led the design, development, and deployment of the solution—at no cost as a pro bono contribution to public service. At the core of the solution is the Arbitrum One (Ethereum) blockchain (link to smart contract). The unique digital solution is powered by Verifiable Credentials and a Digital Wallet app, utilizing WalletConnect for secure authentication and data transfer, along with Alchemy’s RPC service.

It’s worth mentioning that this pilot has already demonstrated a 99% reduction in application time for nine professionals, signaling its real-world efficacy. Moreover, this innovation serves as a compelling asset for employers, focusing Norwegian authorities on supporting businesses in attracting and retaining international talent efficiently.

Here, we observe actors functioning as issuers and verifiers, utilizing components created by Symfoni. These are executed within the respective environments of the various stakeholders.

As we move into the next phase, the team is laying down the blueprints for an enhanced version of this offering. To deepen understanding and engagement, a demo video and a range of mock services will soon be released, giving stakeholders and the public a hands-on experience of this groundbreaking ecosystem.

For organizations and agencies interested in exploring these opportunities, we encourage you to reach out.
