Did you pick up the FOAM Tower?

If you participated in the NY Blockchain Week Scavenger Hunt on the FOAM map…check your wallet! You just got airdropped one 🤗

Several months ago I came across an architecture firm by the name of Morris+Company based in London. I found them on instagram, and what I immediately loved about the studio was their gorgeous, tiny building models.

You can tell these people care about tone and form even before they get to the details. I haven’t read anything about their approach, but I imagine they take their time prototyping different shapes to get the feeling right, then progress to the finer details.

Beyond that, the redish earth-tone colors they use are beautiful. Even though the employ the use of steal and glass to outfit their structures, the buildings have a sense of place and human quality to them.

When I sat down to design the FOAM Tower, I knew I wanted to design something akin to Moco —an orange-pink exterior, symmetrical form, and steal panels that lay flat against the windows.

I also took inspiration from FOAM’s own logo. It’s simple, yet curious. You get the feeling that it represents much more than mapping. Its a great piece of branding for a blockchain outfit — an industry known for its technical acumen and not much else.

That’s part of why we, at BlockCities, were so eager to partner with FOAM in the first place, when we launched the first BlockCities branded collectibles during their Holiday Treasure Hunt.

Not only did they operate a fair and transparent token sale, their background of sculpture and architecture bled through to the project itself. In fact, Foamspace was the first organization to say “Yes” to BlockCities and lend credibility to the project. I say this with no exaggeration, BlockCities would likely not be here if it weren’t for FOAM. 🎉

Since then, our collaborations have grown to weekly Scavenger Hunts, hosted by us and taken place on the FOAM Map. For Blockchain Week in New York City, we wanted to make it even more special.

To do this, we decided to give a special edition FOAM Tower for every user who took part of the Hunt and contributed to FOAM’s user-governed map of the world.

Designing the Building

I wanted the FOAM Tower to be a manageable height, approachable yet sturdy — the FOAM sign fixed atop as beacon of verifiable points of interest and Proof of Location TM. It’s modest, yet beautiful. Strong and exact, yet inviting.

Architecture tells a lot about its intended audience and the architect behind the work. For this building, I wanted it to represent Foamspace and the ambitions of the FOAM project. Can you see these details coming through?

Here are the two buildings I drew inspiration from:

Who would have thought of pink buildings? The feminine tones battling and balancing with the masculine form. I’m completely obsessed with them.

If you missed out on the hunt, there will be more in the future. If you didn’t get the building, find one on OpenSea and bid your heart out. A few can be found here: https://opensea.io/category/blockcities
