As Segwit is nearing activation today on the Bitcoin network, BlockCypher is also getting ready to roll out support for the technology. For a user of our Bitcoin APIs, Segwit will be available automatically and seamlessly:

  • Segwit transactions are fully validated and relayed.
  • Witness data will be available from the transaction API when retrieving a Segwit transaction.
  • Segwit transactions created by a user and pushed through our API will be accepted and validated.
  • We’re monitoring BIP-173 closely and will add support for native P2PWPKH addresses when it’s ready. This will allow us to find and reference Segwit outputs when building transactions.

Currently, a subset of our server cluster has Segwit support enabled. We will monitor the situation closely as the first Segwit transactions start appearing and we’ll continue rolling out support over the next few days, assuming there are no unexpected issues.

No changes in user logic or code will be necessary throughout this process.

We’re excited to see the technology become available on the Bitcoin network and look forward to all the future improvements that it enables, e.g. Lightning Network and improved scripting!
