The Missing Mail by R.K.Narayan is one of the best short stories one would come across, a simple tale about postman Thanappa, an affectionate, sincere, and conscientious postman who deliberately misses a few mails for the greater good in the old Malgudi Days. Fast forward several decades, it isn’t the Malgudi days anymore, and in this new world that has witnessed several leaps in technology if I were to write a new story, The Missing Email it will be deemed not an ideal story but a great mishap.

Machines have long taken over the reins of communication and they cannot be described the way I described Thannapa, so it’s safe to say they are sans the emotional perceptions humans keenly adhere to. But does it mean there are no mishaps or missing emails? If the answer is a “Yes” then I shall sprout wings and dive faster than the peregrine falcon. Since that ain’t happening the answer is always a “No” i.e. emails do go missing, which brings us to the topic of “Email Bounce”.

Now, what exactly is an email bounce?

An email bounces when it’s sent to an invalid address, plain and simple. In the modern world, for businesses, emails are the primary means of communication, just check your email if you do not agree, the welcome greetings upon a new subscription, notifications of your stuff being shipped on e-commerce, escalation, appraisal, and whatnot. But what if the mail addresses used by the company are not legit enough? there would be enormous communication gaps and ultimately high bounce rates that can harm their sender reputation, and prevent their content from reaching valid inboxes in the future. Therefore for businesses ensuring the validity of their emails is of utmost importance.

Now, what can businesses do about this?

Even if someone were a Neanderthal they could answer that question. There are a plethora of services offered by several players(essentially validating the emails is the trick), but there is a catch only the Homo sapiens sapiens would relate to — privacy.
What if behind your backs they are simply tracking your data, logging your data into their systems, and waiting for the next Cambridge Analytica to sell to and change your destinies forever. Sounds too farfetched? Not really; just remember the quote-” Data is the new oil!!!”. Think about the comparison, oil for at least the last few decades has been the commodity defining the world order.

The Real Solution,

Occum’s razor is a philosophical concept I often refer to whilst solving problems, in simple words it would translate as “The best solution to any problem is the simplest one”. Businesses need email validation but privacy is an issue. What is the simplest solution to the above problem? Provide them with a method that assures privacy. That is what we at BlockSurvey have developed, introducing Privacy-focused Email Bounce Checker, a free, open-source tool that validates your emails but doesn’t log any of your data, there are no logins, no adds and no trackers, you just come in, validate a few emails and leave.

The Technicalities,

Let’s take a shallow dive into the technical aspects of the working of the Privacy-focused Email Bounce Checker. It is built over a Github project called the Deep Email Validator and performs the following checks :

  • Regex Check.
  • Typos Check.
  • Checks if the email is disposable or burner email.
  • Checks if the MX address is valid.
  • SMTP check.

There are two modes of operation, the default mode which performs the complete check, and another mode that performs all the checks sans the SMTP check. For any further questions, you can check into the detailed FAQs provided along with the tool. You can also find the source repository on the page, feel free to take the Tool’s development to new heights or copy the code and simply self-host it on your project.

Conclusion,

Among email statistics, bounce rates remain fairly low. Fortunately, a study of numerous major industries indicates the average email bounce rate is 1.06%. But that is no reason to sit back and relax, remember as mentioned earlier high bounce rates affect the sender’s reputation and you don’t want that for your business.
