If We Lay a Strong Enough Foundation

You will come of age with with our young nation.

We’ll bleed and fight for you. We’ll make it right for you.

If we lay a strong enough foundation, we’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you,

And you’ll blow us all away, someday, someday.

Yeah, you’ll blow us all away, someday, someday…

Lately, I’ve been listening to a little Hamilton. Ok, I’ve been listening to Hamilton constantly; literally every waking minute of my day (thanks Amazon Prime Music).

This song is absolutely everything (and my play count would back that statement up). Although it’s a song that Hamilton and Aaron Burr sing about their children, young people born during the infancy of our nation, I can’t help but view it through the lens of a modern educator (perhaps that’s because I am preciously that).

As we’re teaching routines, meeting families at open house, sharpening pencils and making copies each morning … I urge you to take a moment to remember why we do it.

Why we spend more time in our classrooms than our own living rooms.

Why we spend our limited income on snacks and supplies for those who go without.

Why we devote hours upon hours researching a technique, strategy, or tool that just might make the difference that is so desperately needed.

If we lay a strong enough foundation, we’ll pass it on to you, we’ll give the world to you,

And you’ll blow us all away, someday, someday.

Yeah you’ll blow is all away.
