What exactly is trauma?

Trauma is a lingering emotional reaction that stays within us long after the distressing event has occurred. It can interfere in our daily lives, making us feel unsafe, hyper-vigilant and emotionally overwhelmed. Doing simple things (like making the bed) may feel like a monumental task. We snap at the little things because our brain simply cannot process anything more. This is because our cognitive abilities have been impaired.

Not only does trauma affect the brain, it affects the body too. It is a somatic experience. The mind and the body are interconnected and it stands to reason that treating traumatic experience may have limiting results if one aspect is carried out in isolation from the other. Taking a holistic approach to treating trauma can help release it not just from the mind, but from the body too. Healing should always encompass the whole person and when we treat the person and not the symptoms, we maximise healing potential.
