As parents, do we determine our children’s eating habits?

There’s a lot of discussion going around when it comes to childhood obesity, eating disorders and body image problems.

When you are the parent of an obese child, there is tremendous stigma attached to it. Everyone looks at the parent and thinks : That parent is not able to take care of the child. Why can’t they just make the child eat less and exercise?

When both parents and children are overweight, there is a partial probability of a common genetic predisposition. In rare cases obesity can be caused by a medical condition but the most common causes are lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns or a combination of these two. Rather than calling an overweight kid cute, we need to take it seriously. We all know that how harmful obesity can be for them. No offence to anyone, your fat kid looks very cute but you better take his health seriously. I personally know a couple who themselves have crossed all the lines of obesity and their kids too look the same. To top it, the way their mother feeds them is close to insane. I so want to ask her why ? Your three year old daughter whom you find chubby and cute is not able to climb a single stair without assistance. If this is not an alarming sign for you than what is it? I may sound a little harsh but being a fitness coach this is my duty to give you a wake up call. When I see parents feeding their already overweight kids a cheese burst pizza I seriously want to stop them and ask them why?

Here are a few ways in which you can help your child:

1- Please stop saying and believing that your kid is just a kid and he/she can eat and digest anything and everything .

2-Kids are very good when it comes to imitating. Set a good example and eat healthy in front of them.

3-Don’t use junk food as a reward, buy them a toy or a healthy snack instead.

4-Fix one or two days in a month for junk food if your kid loves such food .

5- Make sure your child eats breakfast everyday and not dependent on snack shop of the school or street food.

6- Teach them the difference between healthy and unhealthy food. My 7 years old daughter knows the difference. If not you then who will teach them this?

7- Out of sight is out of find. Don’t keep the junk food at home at all.

Make their food look yummier. A simple smiley with honey on a banana pan cake can do magic for them.

9- Keep a precondition that only after having a serving of fruit they can watch TV or play outside. It will turn into a habit in few days. I have done it myself and have reaped the benefits.

10- Physical activity too is equally important. Lead by example . If your child sees that you are physically active and having fun, they are more likely to be active .

11-Plan family activities that provide everyone with exercise, like walking, biking or swimming .

12-Make an effort to reduce the amount of time you and your family spend in watching TV or playing video games.

Obesity during childhood can have a harmful effect on the body in a variety of ways.Children who are overweight are more likely to become adults with obesity and the risk factors in adulthood are likely to be more severe.

Last but not least and to make the heavy discussion little light, I would like to say that please don’t listen to your parents and their grand parents when it comes to body image. They will always find you and your kid thin no matter how healthy you look. Ask my mother😀
